Jerry was born in Lebanon, IN to Virgil Marshall Stump and Mary Dunkin Stump. He grew up in the community of Edgewood in Anderson, IN. As a young man, Jerry was very involved in community and school, a trait he carried over throughout his life. He loved music and played both the trumpet and the piano. He attended Indiana University, obtaining a BA in Economics/Sociology and later an MBA from George Washington University.
Jerry was commissioned in the Navy in 1959 and retired with the rank of Captain in 1982. He had a very successful Navy career as a Navy intelligence officer. Serving in what is now known as the Cold War period, he was selected to attend the Navy’s Russian language school, a language skill he utilized well in his intelligence career. He was deployed on numerous ships in the Pacific, served during the Viet Nam war, and ended his Navy career assigned to the Office of the Secretary of Defense as an Executive Assistant to the Deputy Under Secretary for Command, Control, and Communications. For his service, he was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, and two Navy Commendation Medals.
Following his retirement from the Navy, he founded two intelligence consulting companies: Jerry Stump and Associates and Klein and Stump. Both companies acted as consultants to the Department of Defense. Following his “second” retirement from his consultant companies, he became a real estate agent in the Annapolis area.
Never idle, Jerry was inventive and loved working with his hands in carpentry. He loved the South River and the Bay in general and enjoyed boating. He was a fan of jazz and Dixieland music, and a bigger fan of cooking and being with friends while enjoying good food, good wine, and Margaritas.
Jerry is predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Elaine; his children from a previous marriage, Julie (Greg) Dossett and Jim Stump; his five grandchildren: Elizabeth Dossett, Katie (Travis) Kastner, Amy Dossett, Alyssa (Greg) Yoo, and Alex Stump; two great-grandchildren; and by his younger sisters Mary Ann Yezek and Jane Shroyer.
His gentle demeanor, engaging smile and ability to connect with people will be greatly missed. As a dedicated Navy veteran, we bid him:
“Fair Winds and Following Seas.”
Jerry will be buried at the Arlington Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
