George Ambrose Miller, Jr. was a builder, like his Father and Grandfather. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his children and their spouses on December 4, 2023, after living 94 years to the absolute fullest.
George built many things. He built homes and boats. He built birdhouses and live boxes. He built playhouses and rabbit hutches for his grandchildren. He built a swing and a sandbox for his great-grandchildren. He built sports teams with the many cousins he grew up with in Eastport, and lifetime friendships with everyone who came into his life. From his humble upbringing in Eastport to his final days in his home in Bay Ridge, George never took a day for granted and cherished everyone who stopped by to “shoot the breeze.” You could count on being greeted with the Eastport handshake and an ice cold Coors beer. George’s loyalty to his friends was unshakable. His loyalty to his family was eternal.
George built houses for customers to turn into homes and along the way built five sandstone houses on Miller Road and in Bay Ridge for his own family. To this day, his houses are the center point of his children and grandchildren. George's father built him a rowboat when he was 10 years old; she’s still tied up at his pier. He taught generations how to row. In turn, George built a boat in his backyard 64 years ago that served as endless entertainment for his young family. The Chesapeake Bay, Severn River, and Spa Creek were George’s playground, and his favorite pastime was teaching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren how to push the shoreline for shrimp for bait to fish, where to catch the best Perch and Rockfish, how to crab from the pier and a trotline, how to swim and ski and tube; how to enjoy all that waterfront living offers.
Four generations of Millers have enjoyed the fruits of George's labor, including their time on the “Shirley M.” George captained his last cruise on her in August and his beloved boat stayed docked within eyesight until his last days.
George was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Shirley Meekins Miller; his parents, George Ambrose Miller, Sr. and Evelyn Lewis Miller; his sister, Mary Joanne Miller. He is survived by his sister Nancy Priscilla Miller Stamates; his son George Ambrose Miller III and his wife Kara; daughters Pamela Miller McNallen and her husband Mike, Linda Miller Davis and her husband Chuck; grandchildren Megan Zweiback (Jeff), Kristin Bunnell (Todd), Erin Kohler (Terry), Eric Miller (Becca), Bryer Davis (Anne), Michael McNallen (Brianna), Brianne Allewalt (Charlie) and Kaitlin Miller Davis Latonick (Michael); and 15.5 great-grandchildren.
The family will celebrate George's life at Taylor Funeral Home on Friday, December 15 from 2pm – 4pm and 6 pm – 8 pm. A funeral mass will be held at St Mary’s Catholic Church on Saturday, December 16 at 10:30 am.
Hospice of the Chesapeake was a great support to our family during our father's final journey. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to this incredible organization.
