Carol Sooby Craig, 85, of Annapolis, died peacefully from natural causes on October 28th, 2022.
Born in Kansas City, KS on June 24, 1937 to Clarence and Helen Sooby, Carol graduated from high school in Pittsburgh and then earned her bachelors’ degree from The Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). It was there that she met Allan M. Craig III who would become her loving husband of 52 years.
Once married, Carol and Allan put down roots in Northern Westchester County, New York, where Carol took on significant volunteer roles with Planned Parenthood and with St. James Episcopal Church of North Salem, where she founded a nursey school that is still in operation today.
During this time, Carol had three children: Allan IV, Lauren and Peter, and was the busy and successful CEO of her growing family and household. Summers included seaside vacations on the New England coast and annual visits to the family island cottage in Eastern Ontario, while winters were filled with cross country skiing at the family lodge in the nearby Adirondacks.
In 1976, a promotion and transfer meant moving the family to Annapolis, which would become “home” for good. Once settled, Carol embarked on a new chapter, earing her JD from the University of Maryland Law School in 1980 and joining the Maryland Bar in 1981, all the while managing three (teenage) children and pursuing the new family recreational focus- sailing and cruising on the Chesapeake Bay.
As the three children grew to adulthood, went away to college (and medical school), married and brought grandchildren into the fold, Carol built a thriving family law practice in Annapolis, first as a sole practitioner and then later as a partner with Dalnekoff and Mason.
In service to her profession, Carol served in numerous capacities with the Anne Arundel County Bar Association, including as its president, with the Maryland State Bar Association, including sitting on the board of governors, as well as several other professional service roles and affiliations.
In their latter years, prior to Allan’s death in 2012, Carol and Allan enjoyed time together on their trawler and at their summer residence on Orr’s Island, Maine, all the while maintaining her law practice and watching five grandchildren grow.
Carol spent the last several years in the company of friends old and new as a resident of Ginger Cover in Annapolis.
Carol is survived by her three children; Allan M. Craig IV and his wife Loredana of York, PA, daughter Lauren Craig and her fiancé Jon Leiman of Crownsville, and son Dr. Peter Craig and his wife Dr. Kristen Craig of Annapolis, as well as grandchildren Allan M. Craig V, Silvia Craig Spitz, Anna Ewald, Matthew Ewald, and Jonas Craig, and two nephews, Niels Holch of Annapolis and Craig Holch of Essex, CT and one niece, Wendy Blume of Los Angeles, CA.
A memorial celebration has been scheduled for Saturday, November 12th at 2:00 pm in Friendship Hall at Ginger Cove, 4000 River Crescent Drive, Annapolis, MD 21401.
The family would welcome flowers or a donation to the Maryland Legal Aid organization, who provides legal services to those in need.
