Bob Green passed away on Tuesday November 26, 2024 at the age of 81. Bob was born on January 8, 1943 in Worcester, Massachusetts, to George and Beatrice Green. After graduating from Antioch College in June 1967, Bob arrived in Ann Arbor to attend graduate school at UofM in clinical psychology, where he met his classmate and future wife, Judi Lempert Green (married 1970-2006).
Bob interned at the University Counseling Center and Psychological Clinic, was a teaching fellow in the Clinical Psychology Program, and later won a research fellowship supporting his doctoral research in adult development. He worked as a clinician for most of his career, in private practice and at Catherine McAuley Behavioral Health Services, where he also served as director for close to a decade and was valued by many colleagues for his mentorship, encouragement and support.
The Ann Arbor folk music community was close to Bob’s heart. While still in graduate school, Bob helped create a local folk calendar, complete with transcribed interviews of such visiting folk notables as Bessie Smith. Bob and Judi were regular attendees at monthly sings at the Ark on Hill Street and participated in the homegrown Ann Arbor Folk Festival at Cobblestone Farm. When the Peter Mattis Fund was created, Bob served in various capacities on its board, as well as with its successor organization, the Ann Arbor Council for Traditional Music and Dance.
Bob was diagnosed in 2010 with Multiple System Atrophy, Parkinsonian type. Over the years, as his condition worsened, Bob particularly cherished regular visits by his close friends and colleagues, Hugh Shirato, Trudy Simon, and Jeffrey Evans. The family also wants to extend their special appreciation to Stefanie Sinks, who served as his dedicated care manager throughout the majority of his illness, and to his devoted and tireless caregiver, Jennifer Mahabir.
Bob is survived by two children, Jesse Green and Luke Blue, his brother and sister-in-law Richard and Sharon Green, ex-wife Judi Lempert Green, nephew Matt Green and niece Leah Kessler.
A memorial service is being planned for early 2025. Interested parties should contact the family directly.
Individuals wishing to make a donation in Bob’s memory are encouraged to direct them to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU.org).
