Jane Carol Warren

Jane Carol Warren (née Harris) passed away at home in Ann Arbor with her husband Richard Hertel at her side on Saturday, November 28. The cause of her death was cancer. Jane was born in Detroit in 1938, the oldest child of George and Virginia Harris.

She married Richard Hertel, the love of her life, in 2001. They shared a passion for their work as psychotherapists and educators. She was also a dedicated and loving mother and grandmother to her children, stepchildren and grandchildren.

She practiced as a psychotherapist and educator for over 35 years. After receiving her PhD from the University of Michigan 1985, she began practicing in Ann Arbor. In the 2000s, she was a board member of the American Psychoanalytic Institute, and created an enrollment program which increased its membership by a third during her tenure. She also was president of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Foundation. As a member of the clinical faculty of the University of Michigan Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry, she supervised the clinical work of psychiatry residents, as well as psychology and social work graduate trainees. She was a founding Member of Allen Creek, a preschool in Ann Arbor focused on supporting the emotional education of whole families. She was dedicated to her patients and colleagues to the end of her life.

Jane is survived by her husband Richard Hertel; her former husband Philip C. Warren; her children Susan Sohn (née Warren) and her husband Dan Sohn of St. Joseph, MI; her son Charles Warren and his wife Sian Townsend of San Francisco; her stepdaughter Kara Cardinale and her husband Mike Cardinale of Chicago; her stepdaughter Colette Fisher and her husband Mark Fisher of Boulder, CO; her grandchildren and step-grandchildren Wade, Serena, Scott, Patrick, Karenna, Daniel, Nicholas Brent and Alyssa; her brother George Harris and his wife Enid Harris; and her brother John Harris.

Jane requested that, in lieu of flowers, to please donate to the American Psychoanalytic Foundation. Further she said that she would appreciate the funds being earmarked for the Teacher’s Academy program for undergraduates.
