David Fredrick Hirth, 76 years old, passed away suddenly surrounded by family, Saturday January 11th. David was born in Ann Arbor on February 26, 1943, son of Fred S. Hirth and Huldah (Huber) Hirth. A lifelong resident of Ann Arbor, David attended Ann Arbor High School and then The University of Michigan for both bachelors and masters degrees. While in college he met his wife of 54 years Barbara (Boyer). After graduation, he began a teaching career from 1966 to 1976. In 1976, he and his partner and lifelong friend Doug Horning bought Stein & Goetz Sporting Goods which ultimately became The M Den, where he worked until his recent health challenges.
While teaching, and later in his business career, he touched many lives as a coach. He coached numerous baseball, softball, hockey and football teams and he cherished the many long term friendships that he formed through coaching. David enjoyed golf (and playing a variety of other sports), Up North (their home away from home in Glen Arbor), and serving his community at Travis Pointe. But the two loves of his life were his church and his family. As a lifelong member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, he dedicated his life to Christ and the growth of the church. Family was everything to Dave and Barb through raising their three kids, Scott (Rennae), Mark (Lisa) and Julie (Dave) and the true joys of his life, his seven grandkids, Taylor, Hunter, Ansley, Bradley, Jake, Cayden, and Ashton. No better husband, father or grandfather could anyone ever ask for!
David is preceded in death by his mother and father and his mother and father in laws, Frank and Virginia Boyer. David is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren and his sister Carol (Tom) Hanselman, and his brother in laws William (Kris) Boyer, and John (Mary Jean Raab) Boyer.
