Barbara was born on April 19, 1945, daughter of E. Marie and Robert Harold Sellers, raised by E. Marie and Lloyd “Red” Kenneth Leigh. She was born and raised in Lima, OH. As an adult, Barb spent her early years as a homemaker, raising her two boys, and keeping up with tons of community events. In 1989, she started work at Des Moines Metro Credit Union as a receptionist, ultimately working her way up to teller manager. She was an exceptional employee who worked hard to serve the members of the credit union and frequently went out of her way to help them by balancing checkbooks and advising clients on personal finances. Barbara took great pride in everything she did and quickly became an instrumental part of the credit union team. While working, she took evening classes to further her abilities in addition to always supporting her boys' milestones.
Regardless of hardships and challenges, Barbara worked relentlessly to give her sons the best opportunities and fun experiences. In a word, Barb was truly selfless. When she did take time for herself, Barb enjoyed crocheting blankets and sewing dresses. Countless blankets were produced by her with great care and thoughtfulness for those who she would give them to. She was also an avid reader and could finish a novel in a few short hours.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Michael (Tracy) Kuhns and Matthew (Christine) Kuhns; and grandchildren, Hannah Hayes, Peyton Hayes, Rian Kuhns, Regan Kuhns, and Nicholas Kuhns. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents.
In lieu of flowers, please direct memorial contributions to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa in honor of Barbara.
