Al graduated from Exira High School in 1970. After graduation he went to DMACC in Ankeny and received his welding certification. On August 26, 1972, Al married his high school sweetheart Kathy (Bintner) in Exira, IA and three children were born from this union. Al retired from John Deere in 2006 after 30 years of service and then moved onto his post retirement career as a school crossing guard, where he touched the lives of so many children.
Al loved people and would talk to everyone; no one was a stranger to him. He always had a story to tell to anyone who would listen. He loved the Iowa State Cyclones, tailgating, grilling and making his famous beef jerky. His biggest love was his six grandkids; teaching them jokes, making "papa juice", giving thumb kisses, playing taxi driver to and from school and watching them in school activities and sports.
Al is survived by his wife, Kathy of 46 years; his children: Greg (Brigette); Amy (Jimmy) Martin, Todd (Rachel); grandchildren, Sam, Ben, Addilyn, Kyler, Aubree and Lane; sisters Gladys (Jack) Gray, Marilyn (Dennis) Roof; brother, Robert (Judi); sister-in-law, Carol Lenning; mother-in-law, Avis Bintner; and many brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Emmert Hansen; and father-in-law, Willie Bintner.
