Sally Bess Cowan Smith Wells was born June 15, 1937 to Ollie and Mrytle McKenny Cowan on a farm near Brisco, Texas. She was the baby of nine children and was fondly called "Babe" by her family. She learned to talk before she walked because her feet never touched the ground. She refused to leave her mom to go to the first grade, but her mom made her go the next year. She graduated in 1955. In September 3, 1958 she married OJ Smith from Laketon, TX and they had three children, Sally (Kookie), Joseph(Joe) and Alicia Jean, they moved 14 times before settling in Higgins, TX for the children to start school. They ran the Higgins newspaper for 13 years.
In 1978 they moved to Pampa, TX and ran motels and apartments. OJ passed away in 1982, Sally then started working at different places until getting a job with the Gray County Court House. She met Ronnie Wells in 1997 and they had many adventures RVing from Oklahoma to California, while making their home in Dumas, TX. Ronnie is a farmer and loves planting and caring for milo. Sally seemed a little jealous of this "milo" as it took lots of Ronnie's time. It was during the "milo" time in 2018 that Sally ended up having to go live in the Great Plains Nursing and Rehab Center due to health problems. She kept her spirits up with Ronnie's help and they adapted to this new season in their lives. Even if it was "milo" time, if Sally needed Ronnie, he was there, as he was there holding her hand when she passed away June 4, 2021.
Sally leaves behind her husband Eddie Ronnie Wells, of the home; daughter Sally Barnes and husband Monte of Gage OK; son Joe Smith and wife Rena of Moore, OK; daughter Alicia Jean Smith of Pampa,TX and a special step daughter Denise Brown of Amarillo, TX.
