In addition, the family will receive friends from 3-5p.m. on June 16, 2024 at the funeral home. His memory may be honored by a donation or memorial to High Plains Food Bank of Amarillo.
Roger was born on October 1, 1933 in Lyons, TX to Neoma Scheffer and Johnny Fahnert. At an early age, he enlisted into the United States Navy and served eight years. Roger was a sailor during the Korean War from 1952-1956 on the ship USS Arnold J, Isbell DD869 and held the title of Store Keeper Third Class. He took much pride in his ship and those who served beside him, his veteran status, and his contribution to our country and freedom.
On June 6, 1964, Roger married his wife Janet “Jan” Kisselburg Fahnert. They were married 57 years before Jan’s death in 2022 and were blessed with three children whom they loved immensely. Roger and Jan were often inseparable and together, they enjoyed serving at their church and planning and cooking for gatherings of their family and friends. His love for Jan is undeniable; he spent most days of his life making sure Jan was cared for and happy.
There are many hobbies and passions that Roger had, including fishing, barbecuing, writing short stories, cheering on all Pittsburgh sports teams, listening to old country music, and sitting in his recliner or backyard chaise while reflecting on life and the weather. His dogs were very precious to him and could always be found by his side.
Roger’s Christian faith was a pivotal and essential part of his life. He was a member and deacon of Immanuel Baptist Church in Amarillo. The people of this church became family to him and his wife. He loved sharing about God’s goodness to anyone who would give him the time and inviting them to church. Roger was also passionate about showing God’s love to people by helping anyone in need. He could often be found helping the homeless and neighbors, picking up food from the Food Bank and distributing food packs to families in need, and working at the church wherever he could serve.
Roger’s family brought him so much joy and contributed to an unforgettable, contagious smile. Roger is survived by his three children Rebecca Waller and husband Troy of Amarillo, Rhonda Siefker and husband Michael of De Smet, SD, and Roger Fahnert, Jr. and wife Penny of Rogers, AR; his sister Judith “Judy” Gauna and brother Louis Wayne Scheffer; sister-in-law Marilyn Fahnert; nine grandchildren named Troy “TJ”, Mehgan, Kristin, Sarah, Roger III, Sidney, Ali, Preston, and Cole; ten great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother Kenneth Fahnert, sisters Ramona Davis and Norma June Fahnert; and two cherished grandsons.
Roger will always be remembered as a devoted Christian and a loving husband, grandpa, son, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
