Jewel was born on July 20, 1922 to James Elkin Willingham and Lutie Ulmo Lyle in Texhoma, Oklahoma. She graduated from Shamrock High School in 1939 as Valedictorian. Then 16, she was too young to enroll in nursing school as she had planned, so she took advantage of a one year scholarship to Texas Christian University. After that year, she attended Draughans Business College in Lubbock and then moved to San Antonio, Texas for nursing school. When that training was cut short by a bout of hepatitis., she worked as a medical secretary in San Antonio. Jewel married Robert Haswell in 1943 and together, they shared 69 years of marriage. She was a supportive and loving mother and never expected her daughter to work while she was in high school because her job was to get good grades. She was also very devoted and active in Women of the Presbyterian Church, and she was presented with a lifetime membership pin for her faithful service. Jewel was an excellent seamstress and sewed her daughter, Pamela’s, clothes while she was growing up. She also loved traveling with her husband to visit their family or to go rock hunting. Jewel loved spending time outside working in her garden and tending to her flowers. As she aged, she embraced a new hobby, genealogy, tracking her family’s presence in the United States back to the mid-18th century.
Jewel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Haswell in 2011; her brothers, James Lyle Willingham and Delton C. Willingham and her sister, Wenonah Willingham Martin.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Pamela Haswell; her brothers, Benny J. Willingham and Eddie Wayne Willingham; her granddaughter, Nicole Baize (William); great-grandchildren, Kirsten Smith (Cody Belton), Caitlyn Clagett (Richard) and Connor Baize; her great-great-grandchildren, Oaklynn and Luca; and numerous nieces and nephews.
