J. Morton Evans, 96 of Amarillo passed away March 25, 2013. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with Dr. Steven Waterhouse of Westcliff Bible Church officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 I-40 East. Jay was born February 9, 1917 in Norman, Oklahoma to Roscoe and Mary Evans. He came to Amarillo in 1951 and in August of 2011, Jay and his wife Noma celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. Jay served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. After the war ended he went to work as a Civil Engineer until his retirement in 1973. One of his greatest accomplishments was the fact that he was the Chief Engineer on the Strategic Air Command runway project at the Amarillo Air Force Base. He was a member of Westcliff Bible Church, the Amarillo Antique Car Club, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and a Charter Member of the Amarillo Senior Citizens Association. He was a Scout leader and a baseball coach. Jay and Noma enjoyed traveling, bowling and table tennis. He was the National Senior Table Tennis Champion. He also loved restoring antique and classic cars. He and Noma would drive their 1960 Cadillac convertible in parades all over the panhandle with a statue of liberty in the back seat and Jay dressed up as Uncle Sam. Jay was preceded in death by his wife, Noma Evans; his parents; three brothers and a granddaughter. Jay is survived by his three children, Marty Evans and wife Dixie of Amarillo, Jane Parrish and husband Dean of Kingston, Oklahoma and Jody Slade of Amarillo; brother, Ralph Evans of Enid, Oklahoma; 9 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be sent to the Amarillo Senior Citizens Association, 1220 S. Polk St. Amarillo, Texas 79101.
