Carolyn lived in Wayside until her dad entered the Navy and then moved back to Seymor; moving to Amarillo a few years later. She graduated from Palo Duro High School in 1960. She then went to Amarillo College and became a Licensed Vocational Nurse. She worked at Northwest Texas Hospital, Amarillo Diagnostic Clinic, South Plains Health Provider, and finished her career at the J.O. Wyatt Clinic.
She was a member of the First Freewill Baptist church for many years. She attended Jan Werner Day Care center where she loved all the people and the staff. Especially those that sat with her at her table and her special friend Jackie. This was a ministry for her; where she would try and take care of those around her and was always checking on them and sending them cards and really enjoyed doing crafts with those at her table. She served as a mentor for America’s Promise and was referred to as a “Dream Team” member.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her father, Barnett, her mother, Estell, and a brother Jerry. Survivors include, daughter Pam Mendez and husband Tiburcio, of Amarillo; daughter Donna Martin and husband Bobby of Amarillo; son Bobby Thompson of Fort Worth; son Steven Thompson and wife Stella of Amarillo; and daughter Misty Jackson and husband Rod of Fort Worth. She is survived by 13 grandchildren – Haley and Gary, Trittschuh, Autumn and George, Arek, Tanner, Trey, Jalon, Shelby, Adrianna, Ashanti, and Esmeralda. Also, by 6 great grandchildren – Brooklynn, Marshall, Kaydince, Gastyn, Samija, and Soraya. Carolyn is also survived by sister, Judy Steward of Amarillo; brother Lonnie Steward of Weatherford, and brother Terry Steward of Amarillo; and many cousins, nephews, and nieces.
She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Elvis.
The family would like to thank the staff, doctors, and nurses at Jan Werner who took such good care of our mom for so many years. And a special thanks to Doctor Arlene Hudson for always caring for and loving our mom.
