Walter Raymond Herbert III

He was born on August 18, 1938 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Walter R. Herbert, Jr. and Irma Koon Herbert.

Ray retired from Lockheed Martin (Martin Marietta), beginning as an electrical engineer with both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Georgia Tech. He was sent to MIT by Martin Marietta as an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow, after which he became an engineering executive until retirement.

Ray’s family moved from New Orleans LA to Jacksonville FL in 1951. Ray and Connie met in junior high school, and enjoyed 60 years of dedicated marriage. They enjoyed foreign and domestic travel and cruises; but, most of all, Ray loved being a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. Diagnosed in 2004 with Multiple System Atrophy, similar to Parkinson’s, he continued enjoying life until the long term effects of COVID, which he had in the summer of 2020, were just more than his body could handle, and he is now at peace with the Lord.

Ray was preceded in death by his sisters, Irma Aileen and Rhonda Diane.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Constance Jeffers Herbert; daughter, Lynn (Shawn) Carsten; son, Jeffrey (Stacia) Herbert; sister, Gwendolyn (David) Crane; brother, Richard (Dotty) Herbert; brother-in-law, Ted Jeffers; and grandchildren, Sydney Carsten, Will Carsten, Phoebe Herbert, and Isaac Herbert.

There will be no service due to COVID issues, but mainly because Ray wanted people to remember him as they had known him in better times.
