A beloved husband, father, grand and great-grandfather, Dr. Miller is best known for serving as a premier General Surgeon in the Central Florida community.
Dr. Miller was born on January 14, 1937 in Houma, Louisiana. He embraced the Cajun culture of celebrating family, music and most of all, great seafood. He married Dorothy “Sissie” Theriot, also of Houma. They were married for 66 years.
Dr. Miller graduated from LSU School of Medicine in 1963 in New Orleans. He was a member of the National Medical Honor Society, Alpha Omega Alpha. While in medical school, he worked summer jobs. There were many anecdotes about his time spent driving a yellow cab at night in the French Quarter. These experiences gave him a deep love of New Orleans, and most importantly, a vast knowledge of where all the best restaurants were located, which he happily shared with anyone who visited the city. He joked he became hungry immediately after crossing the Louisiana state line.
He started his general surgery residency in 1964 at Confederate Memorial Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1966, he was drafted into the Air Force and stationed for two years at the Air Force hospital in Winter Park. In 1968, he returned to Louisiana to complete his general surgery residency finishing in 1970.
In 1970, he returned permanently to Winter Park and began his general surgery practice, working at Florida Hospital and Winter Park Memorial and in 1973, he formed Surgical Associates. During his 45 year career, he introduced innovative surgical procedures to the area, ultimately improving medical care for patients in Central Florida. Dr. Miller was a pillar in the Central Florida community and served as Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at Winter Park Hospital and also mentored many young surgeons.
Dr. Miller was an avid pilot who learned to fly while in the Air Force and achieved the rating of Airline Transport Pilot (ATP), the highest certification issued by the F.A.A. He enjoyed flying his twin engine Beechcraft Baron on countless trips with Sissie to visit family in Louisiana. He was also a longtime member of a group of physician pilots that met all over the country for continuing education seminars.
After retirement, he and his black labradoodle, Beau, gave back to the community by visiting residents at local retirement homes. They could also often be spotted strolling Park Avenue or enjoying the Farmers Market.
He is survived by his wife, Sissie; daughters, Susan Krauser (David) and Rae Clement (Ed); grandchildren, Brian, Bradley, and Brett Clement, Lauren Shepherd, Ashley Blinco and Caroline Krauser; as well as 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carlton C. and Vera Gaidry Miller, brother Arnold A. Miller and son Gene C. Miller, Jr.
Dr. Miller/Gene/Dad/Pop-pop loved to have fun, laugh, and spend time with friends and family. His last few weeks were spent reminiscing with his grandchildren about his escapades growing up along the bayous of South Louisiana.
The family will have a private graveside service.
