Thomas Peter Sarro (88), patent attorney and partner at Larson & Taylor, loving husband father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 28th, 2018 in the care of hospice at the Adler Center in Aldie, VA.
Tom was born on December 13th, 1929 and raised in the Greek Orthodox community in Jamestown, NY. He lived an idyllic life in upstate New York due to the hard work and determination of his immigrant parents who came to America escaping religious persecution and in search of a better way of life. This ingrained commitment to excellence showcased itself in young Tom as he excelled in academics, athletics and leadership.
The first to attend college, Tom went to the University of Rochester graduating with a BS in Chemistry in 1951. Tom played both basketball and baseball for the varsity teams at U of R and later was inducted into the sports Hall of Fame. Tom was also a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. Post-graduation, Tom served in the US Army for two years before returning to attain his law degree at Georgetown University law school. Tom was Chairman of the Patent, Trademark & Copyright section of the Washington, DC Bar and member of the Board of Directors. He also spent a term as President of the Patent Attorney’s Club. Tom spent his career practicing Intellectual Property Law before retiring from Larson & Taylor in Alexandria, VA in 2001.
A sports enthusiast to the end, Tom spent hours on the tennis court and golf course at Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, VA and Palm Aire Country Club in Sarasota, FL. His competitive spirit made him a formidable foe which, combined with his wonderful wit, also made him a well sought-after partner.
Tom is predeceased by his adored brother Christ, is survived by his loving wife Mary, daughters Kristine (husband Carl), Stephanie and Thea, his son Peter, and his grandchildren Carly, Melina, Elbridge, Caleb, Josiah and Phillip.
A viewing will be held at Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington St., Alexandria VA on Thursday May 3rd from 6:00 to 8:30pm. A funeral service will be held at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2815 36th St. NW, in Washington DC. on Friday, May 4th. Visitation is at 10:00 am followed by the service at 11:00 am.
