Kenneth “Ken” W. Miller, PhD (December 18th, 1941 – September 19th, 2022) passed away from the complications of ALS “Lou Gehrig’s disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). His wife of 58 years, Shelly was by his side at the time of his passing.
Ken grew up in Cudahy, WI and was the son of Charles “Sam” and Pearl “Peggy” Miller. Ken attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, College of Pharmacy, where he was an active member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity “Brother Smiley”, and where he met his beloved Shelly. Upon completion of his bachelor’s degree, Ken stayed on in Madison to obtain his PhD in Pharmacokinetics. After a post-doctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University, he joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota, College of Pharmacy where he became highly active in pharmacy education. In 1982, Ken was named President and Dean of Albany College of Pharmacy (Albany, NY), a post he held for 10 years. Following a sabbatical at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), he became Senior Vice President of Graduate Education and Research at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) in Alexandria, VA.
Ken and Shelly were avid travelers with over 25 international excursions that often-included family and friends. After retirement, Ken served as a popular docent at the Stabler-Leadbetter Apothecary Museum in Alexandria, VA. Ken enjoyed playing golf with his neighborhood foursome. Anyone who knew Ken was aware that he was an avid historian and a voracious reader. Fascinated with wide and varied topics in history, his expertise lay in WWII and military tactics.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Charles (Verna) and sister Marilynn (Peter). He is survived by his wife Shelly, brother Fred (Mary), son Keith (Kim), daughter Shelley L. (Nick), grandchildren Alexa (Will), Brett, Christian and Darek, great-granddaughter Raelynn and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Forever a UW Badger fan and a lifelong Packers cheese head, Ken will be greatly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
