James Joseph Turner, 87, of Alexandria, VA died peacefully at his home on Thursday, November 7, 2013. Jim is survived by his beloved wife Martha of 63 years, sons Richard Turner, John Turner (Terry), James Turner (Beverly), daughter Molly Walker (John), twin brother John Turner (Katherine), 12 grandchildren and his loving nieces and nephews. Jim was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend to all.
Jim was born in the Bronx, NY on October 16, 1926. He graduated from the US Merchant Marine Academy in 1948. He served in WWII in the Merchant Marines and later in the US Navy. He worked as a civilian for the Department of Navy and retired in 1980. He was also a retired Captain from the US Navy Reserves. After retiring from civil service, Jim returned to active duty as commanding officer of Floyd Bennet Field, a ship repair facility. Jim retired in 1984 from the US Navy. He later worked for the American Bureau of Shipping.
Jim's greatest joy outside of work was supporting all of his grandchildren in their sports and various activities. Jim was a member of Plymouth Haven Baptist Church.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 11:00 am at Plymouth Haven Baptist Church, 8600 Plymouth Haven Rd, Alexandria. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of James J Turner, Graduating Class of 1948, may be made to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The address is RADM James A.
