Geneva Jones Turner, 98, recently of Falls Church, Virginia, passed away November 8, 2024.
Geneva was born on May 16,1926 to John Roy Jones, Sr and Opaline Lowry Jones in Ecru, Mississippi. After graduating from Ecru High School in 1944, she moved to Memphis, Tennessee and began working as a secretary in the accounting office of the Sears Roebuck & Company regional offices in what is now the Crosstown Concourse.
Geneva met her husband, Waymon Turner when she was still in high school. They wed in 1945 when he was home on army leave, going on to have one child, Phyllis Turner Gray. They were happily married for 74 years until Waymon’s passing in 2019.
After retiring in 1962, Geneva filled her days taking care of her family and serving in the community. As a founding member of Balmoral Baptist Church, she served on many of its church committees as well as parent committees at The Hutchison School. Geneva was a longtime member of the Ceres Garden Club serving in leadership roles including President. She also found joy volunteering as a member of The Woman’s Exchange.
Geneva was predeceased by her parents, her brother John Roy Jones, Jr, her sister Dorothy Lowry Jones and her beloved husband Waymon Turner. She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Turner Gray, son in law David Gray, and two grandchildren, Julie Valentine Gray and David Turner Gray.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday November 22, 2024 at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis, Tennessee.
