Dolores Casey Thompson
Passed away peacefully January 2, 2017, surrounded by family, at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital. She was 88. Dolores was born in South Philadelphia, PA, on May 5, 1928, to Edward and Charlotte Casey. Dolores was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years LTG (USA-Ret.) Nathaniel R. “Ross” Thompson, Jr.; two brothers, Edward Casey and Joseph Casey; and her parents. Dolores is survived by five children, LTG (USA-Ret.) Nathaniel R. Thompson III (Amy Thompson), Kathleen Liesfeld, Barbara Burns (COL [USA-Ret.] David Burns), James Thompson (Kim Monti), and Patrick Thompson; eleven grandchildren, LCDR (USN) Christine Burns, Rebecca Burns (Abhishek Singhal), David Burns II, Charles Liesfeld (Erica Witherow Liesfeld), James Liesfeld, Casey Thompson, Bridget Thompson, Ian Thompson, Kathryn Thompson, Matthew Thompson, and Travis Thompson.
Dolores’ joy was her family; she was affectionately known as “Oma.” Dolores was also an active and dedicated volunteer serving U.S. Army families. She supported her husband’s distinguished 37-year career, living in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kansas, Alaska, Florida, and Germany. Her interests included gardening, needlework, and ornithology.
An interment at Arlington National Cemetery is planned at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in her name to Army Emergency Relief, 2530 Crystal Drive, Suite 13161, 13th Floor, Arlington, VA 22202.
