Beverly Kay Abernathy, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2024, at the age of 80. Born on November 21, 1943, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to W.H. “Bill” and Kathleen Biggs, Beverly's life was a testament to love, resilience, and the joy of family.
Beverly graduated from McGehee High School in 1961. At the young age of 19, six days shy of her 20th birthday, she married the love of her life, Jack Abernathy. Their partnership was one of mutual support and love, with Beverly working nights at Southwestern Bell and Jack working days at JA Riggs Tractor Company in McGehee. In 1967, they welcomed their daughter, Serita, and in 1970, their son, Kenneth, was born.
After a dedicated career, Beverly retired from Southwestern Bell in the early 1990s. She and Jack embraced their retirement by traveling across the United States, often bringing their grandchildren along to create cherished memories. Despite living with daily pain, Beverly's love for life and her family gave her the strength to enjoy a fulfilling and joyful life.
Beverly's family was the center of her world. She had a special bond with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her life. Although she was a private person in her later years, she had a remarkable ability to connect with people. Whether standing in line at Walmart or encountering someone new, Beverly's curiosity and warmth often led to meaningful conversations.
A passionate Razorback basketball fan, Beverly also had a talent for party planning, canning, and crafting. Her crochet creations, including hats, scarves, baby blankets, and Afghans, were cherished by all who received them. She had a keen eye for picking out stylish shirts and ties for her son-in-law and was known for her great sense of humor and perceptive nature.
Beverly is survived by her loving husband, Jack Abernathy, her daughter, Serita Marlin (Russell); her son, Kenneth; her grandchildren Andrew Abernathy (Brandy) of Texas; Rachel Melton (Spencer) of Tennessee; great-grandchildren Beckett and Adaline Abernathy; and Azariah “AJ” Melton; her sisters Diane Robinson, Linda Thompson, Debra Fitton, and a host of extended family and friends who will miss her dearly.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Pinecrest Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at Forrest Hills Memorial Park.
Beverly's life was a beautiful tapestry of love, family, and resilience. She will be remembered for her unwavering strength, her kind heart, and the joy she brought to all who knew her.
