April 2010 I received an email from Saj Motley whom I knew as Jody Motley,  I thought who is Saj and why is he emailing me?  Low and behold I realized it was Jody whom I hadn't seen in 30 years! 
 Fast forward 10 years later we were joined at the hip ever since.  Jody/Saj was a prodigy, you don't come across a true prodigy often in a lifetime but a true prodigy he was.  I will truly miss your presence and I often wonder how I can make it through the day (But God!).  I am a better person, softer hearted and more patient because of these 10 years.  I Loved you then and now.  God give us all strength, still unreal.

My brother Saj. I have felt strange all week after hearing of the passing of my dear brother and best friend who I originally knew as Jody. I missed the home going and I feel an explainable feeling as a result. My story with Jody.... Jo and I met in 1981 and we clicked immediately, in a short while we ended up moving to LA with his hometown great friend Robert Glasper and home town friend Donnet with her children and niece,  so after two send off parties one at my house in Lansing Mi and the other in his home town of Albien MI we headed out to LA on an amazing Journey and my life was forever changed. Jody was a gifted old soul and big thinker with a wit and a charm, he was a  chance taker and a dream maker, liver, giver and I became a part of that dream, he became my inseparable partner in music, he on that bass which his mastery and love of that instrument and music was unparalleled. I'm still in shock but later in life I learned from speaking with Jody that he had a bigger passion than music and it was his love of the father God and Jesus whom he wholeheartedly praised everyday, so I know "Saj" is up there in those pearly gates of heaven welcomed by the angels into the great heavenly musical orchestra singing and playing for the rest of eternity. Rest in eternal peace my great friend and brother.  You will be forever in my thoughts and your family is in my prayers you served well while you were on trip Earth and you were priceless as a motivator and true friend.

My sincere condolences to Phyllis , Jamari and the Motley family.   I knew Jody from  our Childhood village of Carson, Hartwell, Arthur, Second and Wild Street.   It was a lot of us. Jody was always so calm and composed, but would have that warm lovely smile to greet you, making you feel calm  and at ease in return.  He was a sweetheart.  Rest In Peace.  

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Jody. I went to school with him and he was always so nice and caring. I remember his huge afro and how he was always making sure it was perfect. I'll miss his huge smile. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. May your loving memories of Jody help you through the hard days ahead. Rest softly in heaven.

Jody me and others spent countless times up  in Lincolnshire when he was injured playing football those were the good old days you will be missed my friend. My prayers go out to the family fly high until we meet again RIH

I remember meeting you at the food truck that would park across the street from Transamerica in downtown Los Angeles in the morning.  That was around 38 years ago.  The company had 5,000 employees and we didn't even work in the same building.  If it hadn't been for that food truck, we may never have met.  We had both stepped away from our desks to grab a breakfast sandwich and while waiting to be served, we struck up a conversation.  Turns out that we were two musicians who were working to make a living but dreaming of getting that one big break in the industry.  We became friends immediately.  Your passion for music and life were one in the same.  I will always treasure our talks about music, family, life, and God.  I can't believe that you're gone.  The world is a different place now.  Rest well, my friend.  Your big brother, James (Jamo - Jody's nickname for me) Carloss

I remember when Jody joined our band, Steppen Stonz 35 years ago. We remained friends and brothers the entire time. We lost contact over the years but was 
able to reconnected a couple of years ago. We talked almost everyday and soon his son Jovan was introduced to us. He called me on the 27th but I missed his call. I miss him so much and love him so much and I'm blessed he was a part of my life. He will always be here with me in my heart. We're brothers forever. RIP in Heaven.  I love you!

My heartfelt condolences to the entire Motley family.  Classmates since our elementary days. Jody, you will be sadly missed. Rest my dear friend. God bless you all.

My condolences to Auny Phyl, Lisa (My  BFF) and the whole Motley family.  I remember Lisa and I visited Nashville TN at a Convention  and Lo and behold Jody shows up to see Lisa his cousin, to me that was a sign of true family love. Prayers for comfort to Jody's family. Rest in Heaven Jody. 

My deepest sympathies and condolences to Phyllis Motley and her family.   Melvin (Saj)'s mother, Phyllis, was a dear friend  during our school years in WV and has remained a dear friend to this day.  The first time I saw Saj was 56 years ago at the hospital in Logan, WV,  after Phyllis gave birth to her first child, her "baby boy."   

A couple of years ago, Phyllis came to visit me in Myrtle Beach, and she made sure to gather Saj and his sisters on the phone to face time with us, so I could" meet" and chat with them.  We shared good memories.  Phyllis beams with endless love and pride when she speaks about Saj, her other children, and family.  The Lord has His loving angel with Him.  Rest in peace, sweet Saj.   Your spirit will live on through the love and memories you left in the hearts of  your mother, family, and friends.  

My Sincere Condolences, to the family. I would Always tell Jody how Fine He was. Of course, he'd  give me that heart melting smile. What a mild mannered youngman he was.

Jody Motley was my first true love.  We were friends since we were kids in church.  I remember pulling his hair and laughing because I liked him way back then.  We went to Jr high and senior high and spent countless hours together riding bikes and hanging out any chance we got.  I loved him then and the same love to this day.  I will miss you dearly my friend, rest peacefully now, goodbye until we meet again.  

The Merchant Family would like to extend our deepest condolences to Jody’s Family on your loss.  The  member I would like to share is about one Sunday afternoon My Dad the Late John Henry Merchant was one of the Manager’s of the Hayes Albion Baseball Team and Jody and my brother John JR were bat boys and my dad would always yell and tell them get the bats and hurry up there’s a picture of the team that we have. Take your rest Saj and play your bass in Heaven. Thank you for being our RV driver 5 years ago to Tuskegee Homecoming. We had the time of our lives. Great memories.

Because I had fat cheeks...Lol Jody would tell me to keep Preaching that I would reach the world. We was so sad to hear of his passing.  No more pain. Jody gained his wings.
