A year already. My friendship with Tracey began in 1988, when she came to Arizona to write a feature about me for the Star. She's part of my fabric of the Star. Despite the mountain of paper that surrounded her desk, my dog Bella always snaked her way around to the drawer where Tracey kept treats. We both miss her.

My prayers to Mr & Mrs Tyler and Angela, I too grew up in Acton and went to school with Tracey.

Tracey and I went back as far as kindergarten and although we lost touch through the years I remember her with fondness and pride for her many accomplishments.  Mr. and Mrs. Tyler, Angela my condolences to you and your family.  You are all in my prayers.

Tracey came to our dance studio in Mississauga to take salsa lessons... and of course she got hooked on many other dance styles... :)

The studio has numerous events and group outings where we all get dolled up and go out to a ballroom in Woodbridge for a night of latin and ballroom dancing... I know that when she joined us on those nights, she looked very happy and had a great time. She was one of the "gang".

Tracey has many friends at the studio, and we will all miss her dearly.

I grew up in Acton and Tracey and I met in grade 9 at Acton High School.  We became fast friends as we rode our bikes everywhere, played tennis, took tap and jazz lessons together and had many adventures.  We weren’t always a good as our parents thought we were.  Many of our class mates will remember the time that Tracey and I wanted to get out of French class, and so Tracey pretended to faint and I then scooped her under her arms and dragged her out of the class.  Another time we coordinated the class and when she (or perhaps me) called out “flood” we all jumped onto our desks and stood there.  (My apologies to the French teacher many many times over).  We laughed a lot and really we were good kids, just a little goofy.  I remember taking Tracey on a canoe trip in Algonquin Park at Thanksgiving (post university) and it snowed.  We huddled in a tent laughing our heads off as we tried to keep warm.  Another time we traveled to Tobermory and camped again.  She was always up for an adventure and such a good sport.  I know how much she loved her family and my heart go’s out to all of you.   I’m not surprised by all the  comments from everyone on facebook and in the Star… she had a big heart, was always dedicated to her work and was passionate.  She was kind and she was very smart.  She cared.

Tracey's well-respected reporting about justice issues made an important contribution to promoting the prinicples of an open and accessible court system. Her passing is a great loss to us all.

I first met Tracey on my Call to the Bar in 1991.  At the time, I was challenging the LSUC on its requirement to swear the Oath of Allegiance to the Queen.  While most other reporters were puzzled with my taking a stand on principle (after all, "where was the money trail?"), Tracey recognized the merits of pursuing higher values.

As a person of utmost integrity, she was an exceptional individual.  It was reflected in her work.  Her by-line was a guarantee of exceptional reporting.  Her work helped her, as Gandhi advised, to "be the change you want to see in the world".

Her passing is a loss for everyone.  Journalism, and all of society, is a little poorer today.   

May the light of her torch ignite the passions of the next generation.  Together, may we "comfort the afflicted ... and afflict the comfortable!"

My deepest sympathy to Mr. & Mrs. Tyler and Angela.  I was so sad to hear of Tracey's passing.  I have known Tracey since we met at Joyce's dancing school and all through high school.  I don't ever remember Tracey saying anything mean about anyone.  She was so classy and dignified.  I especially loved her warm smile.  It's clear from all the messages that she was well respected and will be missed.

I met Tracey on September 1st, 1984 – I remember this exact date because Tracey was with my now wife Karen and this is the date we met. Karen and Tracey were friends since childhood and Tracey was a constant in our lives in the 80’s and 90’s. Two memories of Tracey stand out for me:

When Karen and I married in 1987, we asked Tracey to be the MC for our wedding reception. Some of our friends were surprised because – at least back then – it was unusual for an MC to be female and for it to be someone so young (25). But we never even considered anyone else – Tracey was such an obvious choice. And she did a fabulous job – she was gracious, witty, and completely in control. And to no one’s surprise who knew her, she did her homework – telling stories about the two of us that she really shouldn’t have known about (and getting lots of laughs from how she told these stories). After attending many weddings over the years, neither of us can think of anyone who has done a better job than Tracey did that day.

My second memory is about Tracey’s thoughtfulness and generosity. When our daughter was young, Tracey always made a point of giving her a birthday and Christmas gift. But Tracey never went the easy route and bought Barbies or Polly Pockets or video games. She really thought about who she was giving the gift to and went out of her way to find something special. One that I’ll never forget is a stand-up cardboard puppet stage complete with puppets – an absolutely perfect gift for our daughter, who at that time was full of imagination and a desire to entertain.

It is so sad that she has been taken during what should be the prime of her life. Having now read what others have written about Tracey since she passed, it is so nice to see the positive impact she had on so many during the time she was here. 


I am a human rights lawyer who has had the privilege of meeting Tracey and talking to her over the years about important issues in the Ontario Human Rights system.  Tracey championed issues near and dear to me and had a lovely style in the way she treated clients who spoke to her about their stories.  Tracey had a natural curiosity about anything she did.  After attending an event showcasing my brother's wines, her curiosity led her to the winery, the history of the area and how wine makers come to be.  Tracey persuaded the paper to do an article for the food section, despite being the legal affairs reporter.  When I read the article, it made me weep and laugh.  I learned more about my brother and the challenges he faced than he had ever shared with me and the article really captured the area, the history and wine making and my brother's approach to wine.  That article and the time I shared with her in its making, will be a wonderful memory to hold.  I was shocked to learn of Tracey's death.  It seems impossible to me that such an energetic light and generous spirit could leave us.  My condolences to Dolores and Ted and Angela and the rest of the family.  I can only imagine that you must be a wonderful loving family to have a daughter who is so thoughtful, curious, passionate and adventurous.  I will make a donation in honour of Tracey to the Acton Town Hall - my sincere sympathies and condolences.  geri Sanson

I don't imagine she would mind if i told you now. After her first diagnosis, she was enraged about having to take chemo and all that entailed. We talked about ways to relieve stress and one day she passed a Salsa lesson ballroom on one of her trips for a story. She went in for a lesson and then enrolled and went regularly. Even though she would not dance in front of me, her body because looser and more relaxed and so also, she let her hair relax when the wig went. She became more herself after the cancer, freer, alive….Cha, Cha, Tracey! Love, e

Ted, Dolores, Angela and family… It's been one day and the world feels emptier for me without Tracey . She would tell me of your struggles taking her to McMaster, getting her to take the chemos in the first place and your constant care and worry about her. She knew all you did but did not know how to make it any easier for you. She was grand and I loved out time together. I loved hearing her stories about the paper and her fight for justice. I am an Australian lawyer who is a joint author of a book on miscarriages of justice in Australia, Britain and Canada. I wanted to include Canada in our work because I had been intrigued and sometimes horrified by what I had heard of some of the Canadian cases. Time and again, the articles which interested and inspired me were written by Tracey. 
I just wanted to take this opportunity to let her friends and family know that the work she did was really important. It gave hope to many who had been dudded by the legal system in Canada. As a journalistic role-model she set a high standard in courage and integrity. Her influence was much greater than she realised, and will continue to inspire others for many years to come.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Tracey's untimely passing. The media has lost a wonderful reporter and the world a big heart.   My condolence to all Tracey's friends and loved ones in what I am sure is an extremely sad and difficult time.

   Tracey Tyler knew the courts inside out. She would always help a reporter who didn't know the legalities or background of a case they had been assigned to.  She was very helpful, and always pleasant.  I am so sorry to hear of her passing.

During this difficult time we would like to extend our most heartfelt sympathies. 

Tracey and I had dinner together in about 10 Canadian cities in the decade that we both covered the CBA annual gathering every August, she as the Star's star legal reporter, me as the justice reporter for Southam-Canwest-Postmedia. It was a true rite of summer. I felt I got to know a lot about her and her family, whom she adored. She was one of the classiest people and best reporters I have ever met. We were the friendliest of competitors and I immensely appreciated her dry wit and calm professionalism. We last exchanged emails in February — me seeking input for a presentation to a legal conference, which she generously provided, in short order no less. She will be missed.

I got a call from Tracey when I was home for Christmas from my journalism program in Arizona. She wanted to come down and do a feature on me. Even as a cub reporter, she was a pro. And, even then, had her eye on programs within the justice system in Arizona, which  she looked into while she was there.
Reading the story in the Star makes me feel like I didn't know her nearly well enough. Our own justice system has lost a very important figure and many of us have lost a friend.

I remember always running into Tracey in the ladies' washroom here at work. We would take a moment and chat. Tracey was usually on her way back from the gym and she took her health and fitness very seriously. When I spoke at a colleague's funeral, she went out of her way to talk to me and tell me I did a good job. She also shared her memories of that person.
Tracey embodies the qualities of a caring person and her journalistic calling is clear evidence of just that. Though I didn't know her well, I feel the world is a lonelier and sadder place without her. Please accept my condolences to the whole family.
