Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at the University Church of Christ Chapel, 733 E.N. 16th Street, Abilene, with Randy and Rick Hale officiating. Burial will follow in Ross Cemetery, Baird, Texas, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory, Abilene, Texas. The family will receive friends at a visitation 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hale was born in Cedar Gap in East Texas on May 5, 1920. She graduated from Abilene High School and attended Abilene Christian University. Mrs. Hale worked at Consolidated Aircraft in California during WWII and returned to Abilene in 1946. She retired from ACU after serving as secretary for the maintenance department.
Mrs. Hale married her late husband, Ray Hale, on November 12, 1941. They celebrated 59 years of marriage before his death in 2000. She was a faithful member of the University Church of Christ and loved serving God there together with her family and friends. With her love of life and absolute willingness to help others, Vera had a positive impact on everyone she met. Mrs. Hale modeled love and service to her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Mae Huskin; her husband, Ray Hale; and her brother, C.F. Huskin, Jr.
Mrs. Hale is survived by her sons, Randy Hale of Abilene and Rick Hale and his wife, Mary, of Roswell, New Mexico; five grandchildren, Wendy Hale of Abilene, Josh Hale and wife, Stephanie, of Abilene, Dakota Hale of Houston, Texas, Jordan Hale and his wife, Erin, of Sacramento, California, and Katie Hale of Amarillo, Texas; one great-granddaughter, Kaia Hale; one sister, Rubye Faye Grubb of Hurst, Texas; and one sister-in-law, Wanda Douglas, of Abilene, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial gifts be given to the Christian Service Center of Abilene, 901 Mesquite Street, Abilene, Texas 79601.
