Sam as he was affectionately known was born at home on August 18, 1952 in Kinston, NC to the late Jimmy and Alice (Griffin) Dixon. He grew up in North Carolina where he began his education before moving to Brooklyn, NY where he finished school. He always adored his mother for her nurturing and care as she raised him. Being an independent thinker and never accepting the status quo, Sam found himself in an interesting place in life as he reached adulthood. Seeking to experience more than his surroundings offered him, he decided to join the United States Air Force. This began a 21-year career where he served proudly and honorably. His career took him too many destinations however, his assignment in England was the longest and would prove to change his life for many reasons. While stationed at Alconbury Air Force Base one evening a young lady with pretty legs as he would recall caught his attention. After jumping many hurdles society had placed on them, he eventually married this young lady, Rosemary Irene Drawwater on July 18, 1975 in Huntington England. There’s was a love story for the books. Sam and Rosemary had three children who they loved, nurtured, and instilled solid values. Sam’s life would change again when he met Bro. Ross Wissman and he led Sam to Christ. Being a natural leader, he became actively involved in the congregation of the Church of Christ in Milden Hall England. He loved evangelizing, serving in the congregation and was an Elder. Just before his retirement, the family relocated to Minot, ND, where he retired from the Air Force on March 11, 1992. During his time in the Air Force, he served with such devotion that he received many awards and honors, always a humble man he never gave much attention to all he had done. Always the hard worker and excellent provider he went onto to begin another career with United States Postal Service as a Distribution Clerk. After his daughter, Sharleene made Abilene home Sam and Rosemary soon followed, then Ian, and finally Una to complete the family circle being together again.
Sam loved the great outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and collecting. He not only enjoyed hunting but also enjoyed sharing his passion with others. He was privileged to take his son, grandsons, and some of their friends hunting and sharing time together. He always felt young people who had a hobby would be less likely to get in trouble. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, especially Saturday morning, “Garage Saleing”.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Elijah; brothers, Calvin, Richard Dixon; sisters, Patricia Briscoe, and Arletha Smith. He leaves to cherish precious memories his devoted wife, Rosemary Dixon; daughter, Sharleene Jacques and her husband, Claude; his son, Ian Dixon; cherished grandchildren, Domonique Gordon, Donovan Jacques, Quincy Dixon, Samuel Jacques, Claudia Jacques, Claude “Orion”, and Michael Jacques; his only surviving sibling, James “Jay” Dixon; and brother-in-laws, Matthew Smith, Andrew Drawwater, and Peter Drawwater; aunts, Hannah Johnson and her husband Frank, and Mable Lee Griffin; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
