Mary Stone

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at Holy Family Catholic Church at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 from 6-8:00 PM with a Rosary beginning at 6:30 PM in the chapel of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 US Highway 277 S. in Abilene.

Mary was born on May 5, 1944 in Hamlin, Texas to the late Feliciano R. Marentes, Sr. and Manuela (Jimenez) Marentes. She grew up in Hamlin in a large family with her siblings. Mary eventually relocated to Abilene. She married David Stone and was a devoted and caring wife for many years. She traveled to the nursing facility David lived in near Waco monthly to be of support. Mary was a hard worker and worked in environmental services for Abilene Regional Hospital now Hendrick Medical Center South for almost 50 years.

Though Mary and David never had children of their own, she raised her nieces Amie and Cynthia. This mothering and caring was passed on to their children when she stepped in and helped care for her great-nieces and nephews as well. She was devoted to her Catholic faith. She had a special love to St. Anthony and embodied his very legacy for caring for children and others. She could have been described as a Saint for her family, always putting her needs behind the needs of others. She enjoyed the simple things of life such as sewing, feeding the birds, and creating memories with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Feliciano, Jr. and Ruben Marentes; sisters Lupe Rodriguez and Irene Ramon.

She is survived by her husband David Stone; nieces Amie Gearhart and Cynthia Stevens; sisters Lola Wherry, Patsy Terry, and Inez Carreon; brothers Eddie Marentes and Nicholas Marentes; great nieces and nephews Travis Burleson, Cristelle Stevens, Ryan Burleson, Nicholas Burleson, Jaden Stevens, Alexandria Burleson, Catrina Stevens, Sophia Gearhart, Kendra Gearhart, Nikkoli Gearhart, and Holee Gearhart; her Stone family-in-laws; and numerous other relatives and friends.
