Leland Busby Carroll, Jr.

A graveside service will be Saturday, August 13th at 9:00 am in the Garden of Hope at the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home & Garden of Memories 5701 Hwy. 277 S. Abilene, TX 79606. The family will hold a visitation from 6:00 to 9:00 pm Friday August 12th at the funeral home in Abilene, TX. A memorial service will be held in Houston, TX at Second Baptist Church Saturday August 27th, 2022 at 10 am.

Buz Carroll was born in Ft. Worth, TX on October 24, 1944, to Leland Busby Carroll Sr. and Margery Casey Carroll. He graduated from Cooper High School in 1962 and continued on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Texas Tech University in 1967, a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1968, and a PhD in mechanical engineering from Texas Tech in 1971. During his years in academia, Buz was ASME president, SAE vice-president, and member of engineering honor societies Tau Beta Pi, Pi Tau Sigma, and Phi Kappa Phi. He received numerous awards and accolades and was well thought of by his peers. Professionally, Buz was the founding member of the Production Engineering Association, technical editor for the Society of Petroleum Engineers, a licensed professional engineer, and author of several technical publications. He began his career with Sun Oil in 1971 and continued to work in oil and gas until his retirement from EOG Resources in 2009, at which time he had worked in the oil and gas industry for 38 years.

Buz fell in love with Dora Ann Duncan during his time at Texas Tech, and the couple married in Houston, TX in 1973. After their wedding, the couple moved overseas to Europe while Buz worked as an offshore engineer for Sun Oil. After their time overseas, the couple moved back to the United States, where they started a family. Buz’s career would take them to Valencia, CA, and Dallas, TX before returning to Houston and then Corpus Christi. Buz and Dora were members of Second Baptist Church in Houston, TX. In addition to serving in the church, they enjoyed serving on the board of Young Life, were active in BSF, and took courses in Hebraic roots, culminating with a trip of a lifetime to Israel in 2004. Buz was an avid hunter, country music lover, wonderful dance partner, dog trainer, child of God, baritone singer, jeep mechanic, jeep driver, inventor, servant, usher, outstanding teacher, and loving husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. He was beloved by many and will be dearly missed. Buz was generous, driven, funny, humble, fun loving, and no nonsense. He hunted the same hunting lease driving the same jeep for 50 years.

Buz is preceded in death by his parents, Margery and Busby Carroll, and his daughter Jan Carroll.

Survivors include his wife, Dora, of Houston, his daughter Summer Carroll Burke of Houston and husband Brian Burke, his daughter Allison Carroll Case, of Dallas, and husband James Case, as well as five grandchildren – Aidan Carroll Burke, Caroline Mackenzie Case, Ainsley Elizabeth Case, Bennett Fleur Burke, and Charlotte Casey Burke. Aidan Burke, Brian Burke, James Case, and Joey Helm will serve as pallbearers. James A. Duncan of Montgomery, TX and Jim Helm of Abilene, TX will serve as honorary pallbearers.
