James P. “Jay” Wooten, 87, passed away on January 12, 2013 in Duncanville, TX. A memorial service is scheduled for 1:00p.m., Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at First United Methodist Church in Abilene with Rev. Brett Stewart officiating under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St., Abilene.
Jay was born on March 11, 1925 to Gray and Carolyn Wilson Wooten in Abilene, TX. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1943 and then attended Hardin-Simmons University.
Jay married Audie Merrell on November 8, 1953. He served his country in the U.S. Navy for 20 years and was employed at the Abilene State School for seven years before his retirement. Jay and Audie also served as camp managers of Butman Methodist Camp for 8 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Abilene.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Audie Wooten; and his sister, Carolyn Camp.
Survivors include his daughters, Jan Wiggins and husband, Rick of Duncanville, TX and Ann Drew and husband, Scott of Mesquite, TX; a brother, Gray Wooten, Jr. of Buffalo Gap; grandchildren, Rick Wiggins, Jr. and Christopher Wiggins; great-grandchildren, Gage Wiggins and Claire Wiggins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 202 Butternut, Abilene, TX 79602.
