She was born on October 4, 1924 in Fort Worth to Richard Barto and Willie Mae Hodges. Her family was one of the first 100 families to settle in Tarrant County, Texas. Dorothy graduated from Paschal High School in Fort Worth in 1941 and attended Baylor University from 1941-1942. She was married to Tommy Lee Evans on October 10, 1942 and lived in College Station, Texas, Kingsville, Texas, and Fort Worth, Texas during their first 18 years of marriage. They moved to Abilene, Texas in 1960 where she lived until returning to Tarrant County in 2009 and living in Grapevine, Texas. She was a member of Broadway Baptist Church, Fort Worth, First Baptist Church, Abilene and First Baptist Church, Grapevine. While at First Baptist Church, Abilene, she served in numerous ministries such as Women’s Missionary Union, Prayer Ministry, Sarah Sunday School Class and, along with Tommy, was a sponsor for youth mission trips and choirs tours. She was a member of the Texas A & M Mothers’ Club and served as State Treasurer. She was also a member and Past President of the Abilene Thursday Book Club. Dorothy worked as a salesperson and manager for Tupperware for nine years and in the bookkeeping department of First Baptist Church, Abilene for 18 years until her retirement.
Dorothy loved to travel with her husband Tommy and was affectionately known as Rand-McNally among her family for her map reading and navigation skills. She also loved celebrating special occasions with family and friends and especially enjoyed being with Tommy’s and her Supper Club friends. More than anything else, Dorothy loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and loved to worship and to serve Him. She exemplified her Christian faith and leaves behind a legacy of kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, and unconditional love for her family and all who knew her.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her three sons: Tim Evans and wife Rita, of Fort Worth, Texas; Richard (Rick) Henry Evans and wife Connie, of San Antonio, Texas, and David Lee Evans and wife Kelley, of Coppell, Texas. She has six grandchildren: Lance Evans and wife Lori, Chad Evans and partner Madeline, Brad Evans and wife Fiona, Heather Evans, Abby Misegades and husband Logan, and Katy Evans; five great-grandchildren: Sarah, Grace, Silas, Clare, and Hugh Evans; five step-grandchildren: Laura Barclay and husband Keith, Analiese Schell and husband Jason, Lindsay Zindel and husband Nick, Landon Webb and wife Kerri, and Dylan Webb; and six step-great-grandchildren: Skyler, Emma, and Peyton Barclay, Dillon Jacobs, Kellianne Schell, and Laine Zindel. She is survived by two brothers, Robert Hodges and wife Betti, of Addison, Texas and Bill Hodges and wife Ann, of Fort Worth, Texas; and two sisters, Margaret McCain and Mary Beth Thaxton, both of Hide-A-Way Lake, Texas.
Visitation will be held for family and friends at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory, Abilene, Texas on Sunday, October 21st from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the First Baptist Church Chapel, Abilene, Texas at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 22nd, officiated by Dr. Phil Christopher. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery, Abilene, Texas, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home.
