Doris would be 99 today. She had style and grace for as long as she lived.

She cared for others as much as she did herself and she devoted her life to her family.

This is the woman who made me love adrenaline, because she introduced me and was the enabler of all my adventures from the biggest roller coasters to the highest drops in the amusement parks, she was always there next to me. Laughing and screaming with me, accompanying me on any ride I wanted to go on.  While Stan stayed put on terra firma. This inevitably started my love for adrenalin-seeking sports and activities.

Doris was also passionate about Christmas tradition, with her cooking and baking that she would even mail to us in the post if we were missing it. Her famous CCCs were never matched no matter how hard I tired.

One Christmas day, dad and I were going to cook our first turkey and with our combined cooking skills, knowledge and lack of internet we had no clue how to cook a bird. From a full country away, she was able to walk us through the process. We did, however, forget to remove the plastic bag of giblets, and I don't think we ever told her about the melted plastic in our dinner. We were just happy that it mostly worked out.

She had a love of 50s and 60s pop music and had a stellar record collection for the time. Included in that collection was the smurfs and sesame street LPs for us grandkids.

Doris had a witty humour with a touch of sarcasm that would make anyone laugh, no matter the situation.

We will forever miss her laugh, her smile, her humour, and most of all the love she gave to everyone in her life.

She was 5 weeks from 99 years of age when my dearest Gran, Doris passed yesterday morning. She was the epitome of class. Her house was impeccably styled, her hair and outfits echoed Jackie O and she was the consummate wife, mother and hostess. As a young girl I was a tomboy that didn’t think it possible to have her sense of style.Gran hand sewed couture outfits for my Barbie collection. She taught me the value  of taking off one accessory before you leave the house. To this day I invariably do a second look and edit my outfit  just before I step out the door. I still have her tips on how to  press pants, balance a checkbook, and not overwork pie crust. I only buy soft natural bristle brushes for my hair because she assured me I’d have hair as long a Crystal Gale if I took care of it! 
Gran hand wrote her gift cards and letters were crafted with a beautiful penmanship. You could expect that your birthday would never by missed and her gift would the one you’d look forward to because it was always appropriately selected. She could have given the Ted talk on why all of that matters. 
She loved to tell me that her residence was nice but it was a pity about the old people. When she finally resigned to moving into a care facility she would whisper in my ear “why don’t you and I get out of here; these old  people won’t even know I’m missing?!”.  She had an iPad into her 90’s and age aside she could pull off a decent email. She tried Facebook for a hot minute. One day she wrote what she thought was a private message to me on her public timeline. I tried to walk her through removing the post but I got an earful about how maybe I could just call and how texting and Facebook was for the birds. I’m now inclined to believe she was right on all accounts! I could have called more. If you’re still reading this call your loved one right after, texting is for the birds. I’m going to have to find a very different way to speak to her now, but somehow I know she’ll hear me!  

I was sorry to hear about Doris. What a wonderful woman she was - so cheerful and kind and always so lovely to be around. Take care.

I was stunned, we had no idea she wasn't doing well,  I can only be glad that we made our trip to see her when we did as my memories retain that picture of her.  I was ready to buy a card and mail it to Doug but the same thing as writing this ......... what do you say, what can you say?  She had a full, long life and touched a lot of people along the way.  As you say, she will be dearly missed.

﻿I was sorry to hear about Doris' death at a time when seeing her was almost impossible. Doug and Liz made heroic journeys to be with her and I wish them "safe home", after her peaceful passing.

We are glad that you and Liz were able to get to Abbotsford to be with your mom and start sorting things out.  This must be a difficult task when so many memories get in the way.  We only met Doris one time decades ago and remember her as very much a lady.  This is probably why you turned out so good.  Can you imagine what you would be like if she had not been there to keep you on the "straight and narrow"?  You did turn out to be the most thoughtful and attentive son and she had the pleasure of knowing that she had done a good job raising you.  Take care of yourself.

I am truly sad to hear of your mother's passing.
As I am looking back on life, I realize that I didn't meet your parents until I was 12-13 years old.
Every time I think of either your Mother or Dad, I think of them laughing. They were both fun to be around and even as a child I thought it was cool to have "The Clay's" visiting.
You and your family must have similar memories, but many more.
Once again, our deepest condolences.  I know it will be sad without Doris for Christmas.
However, please have a memory filled Christmas.
