A historic chapel with modern amenities

Before our facility was a funeral home, it was the historic Stoudemire Home, among the oldest houses in all of Chapin. Today, Chapin Chapel still has some of the original touches from when it was purchased, but the original structure still stands. Although our funeral home facility has quite a storied history, we understand the services and products today’s families require and stand ready to serve more generations of South Carolina families.

History

In 1974, Steve Caughman and Harry Harman purchased one of the oldest homes in Chapin, South Carolina: the historic Stoudemire Home. Steve and Harry had the foresight to see that families in Chapin had to drive 30-plus miles to the closest funeral homes, which were all in Lexington, Newberry and Columbia. They transformed the historic home into Caughman-Harman Funeral Home – Chapin Chapel, which still has many of the original features as well as the original structure from when it was purchased by the businessmen.

Serving Lexington County for decades

In addition to Chapin Chapel, the Caughman-Harman Funeral Homes have 2 other locations in Lexington County. The 1st location was founded in 1966 by Steve and Harry and is located in Lexington in a historic pre-Civil War era home built in 1850. The other location, West Columbia Chapel, was established in 2006 on the grounds of Southland Memorial Gardens.

With these 3 locations, we are able to provide funeral and cremation services to many families in the Midlands region with the values and commitment to care that were established by our founders more than 50 years ago.
