Cremation in Columbus

There are many options for cremation in Columbus—and they're not all equal. We specialize in cremation services that honor loved ones in personalized ways. With expertise in scattering ashes and a friendly team dedicated to the little things, we provide service that is second to none. Schoedinger Midtown operates an on-site crematory, which means your loved one never leaves our care. We also have a cremation viewing suite.

More and more people are choosing cremation over traditional burial, but most aren’t familiar with the many options:

Tara’s Touch grief therapy dog program

Dogs were dubbed man's best friend for a reason. They're loyal, nonjudgmental listeners who love to be petted, and petting a dog has been shown to lower stress levels and improve mood. Our grief therapy dog is available by request to accompany you while you are making arrangements, attending a loved one's funeral and more.

We deeply appreciate those who have sacrificed for our freedoms, and we specialize in serving the veterans community. It's our privilege to honor veterans and their families in need of funeral services. The Dignity Memorial^® Homeless Veterans Program offers dignified funeral services with military honors to eligible homeless and indigent veterans. In addition, the Dignity Memorial Public Servants Program offers no-cost tributes for career and volunteer law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency services personnel who fall in the line of duty.

History

In 1829, Philip Schoedinger emigrated to the United States from Dörrenbach, Germany. Philip was a craftsman by trade and in 1855 he opened a casket-making company. In 1865, Philip established Schoedinger & Brown on West State Street in Columbus.

Philip's sons, George J. and J. Albert, soon joined the family business. Shortly thereafter, the funeral home began to see such innovations as the addition of the first automobile hearse and a new chapel at 229 E. State St., which was the first chapel built expressly for the purpose of funeral service and one of the earliest in America of such magnitude. Today the belltower at this location stands as a city landmark. Other firsts, such as becoming one of the first companies to offer an air-conditioned building and the first to offer guaranteed advance funeral arrangements, soon followed.

In time, George J.'s sons, Fred and George R., also chose to join the family funeral home, known at that time as Schoedinger & Co. In 1933, George R.'s three sons, George Jr., Robert and John, all entered the family business.

As the funeral home grew, so did the Schoedinger family's desire to offer more services and greater convenience to the families of Central Ohio. In 1950, the Schoedingers opened their Hilltop Chapel on West Broad Street; 1961 saw the addition of the Northwest Chapel in Upper Arlington. Linden, Grove City and Reynoldsburg all followed.

In 2016, the Schoedinger locations in Hilltop and Linden were rebranded Heart & Hope Funeral Home by Schoedinger, as an evolution of the Schoedinger brand's commitment to affordable funerals and cremations. In the years that followed, the Grove City funeral home was relocated and a new location opened in Dublin.

In 2021, Schoedinger Funeral & Cremation Service and Heart & Hope Funeral Home by Schoedinger joined the Dignity Memorial family of funeral, cremation and cemetery providers.

Our historic Midtown building

Schoedinger Midtown is located in a historic building on East State Street, in Midtown. A plaque outside the building, where Dr. Starling Loving once lived, reads:

In 1920, a writer for the Architectural Forum wrote about this rambling structure. "To find an interesting piece of architecture in a medium-size, Middle West town was likened to chancing on an oasis in a none-too-fertile country." He especially commended architects Howell & Thomas for achieving such fine results in the North Italian style while incorporating and adding to an existing residential structure.

The house that was the nucleus of the funeral house may still be seen in the center of the drawing. Lyne Starling (1784-1848), a local wealthy community leader, bought fine land at a sheriff's sale in 1909. The house was built during the Civil War by businessman John Joyce. In 1884, Dr. Starling Loving (1827-1911), a great-nephew of Lyne Starling, bought the house and lived there until his death.

In 1847, Lyne Starling gave $30,000 to build a hospital and medical school under one roof. For the first time in America, medical education and patient care were integrated into one facility, a concept that was years ahead of its time. The building was at the southeast corner of State and 6th streets and was known as Starling Medical College.

Dr. Starling Loving graduated from Starling Medical College in 1849. He was president and honors man of his class. He was invited to intern at New York's Bellevue Hospital. Later he became surgeon for the Panama Railroad but returned to Columbus to begin almost a lifetime of teaching at his alma mater. He was responsible for bringing the sisters of the Poor of St. Francis to Columbus and leasing part of the school to them for a hospital. Most people can remember the building as St. Francis Hospital, which was torn down for the new Grant Hospital.

When Dr. Loving died, his daughter and her husband, Dr. Charles S. Hamilton, bought the house and lived there until 1916. Dr. Hamilton became chancellor of Starling-Ohio Medical College, now University Hospital.

Philip Schoedinger (1825-1880), a cabinetmaker born in Dörrenbach, Germany, founded the funeral establishment in 1855. This company is therefore Columbus' oldest family-owned business. In 1916, second-generation J. Albert (1870-1932) and third-generation brothers Ferdinand (1881-1935) and George R. (1884-1961) purchased the land for their new funeral home. Today, the funeral home is operated by the fourth, fifth and sixth generations Robert S., John F., John A., David S., Michael S. and John R. Schoedinger. This handsome chapel, completed in 1918, was the first in Columbus and one of the earliest in America of such magnitude. The bell over its entry was rung only once, according to fourth-generation John Schoedinger, when some waggish associate told a new man that he was to ring the bell each morning at five. After his one performance, the bell rope was removed.
