Acerca de

Parklawn Memorial Park and Menorah Gardens is located six miles from Washington, D.C., in Montgomery County, Maryland. Our cemetery entrance is on Veirs Mill Road in Rockville and follows a half-mile drive through Rock Creek Park across quaint stone bridges. Rock Creek Park extends into Washington, D.C., and buffers Parklawn on three sides.

Our beautiful cemetery property features old oaks, maples, beech, walnut, cedar and other trees and flowering shrubs. Some of our magnificent oak trees pre-date George Washington. It is often a surprise to visitors to find the many groves of trees, along with artistic and religious interests, in the midst of the busy Rockville/Bethesda corridor.

Modern, worldly accents

Private/semi-private estates at Parklawn Memorial Park and Menorah GardensOver the years, our property has developed as a modern cemetery. In addition to places of burial, there are embellished works of art, features of various religious significance and tributes to our armed forces. Deer, fox and various birds indigenous to the area add to the park-like setting.

Three mausoleum buildings contain approximately 700 crypts with marble fronts imported from Italy and Portugal. Our Heron Fountain is located in the courtyard between the buildings, providing a serene spot for personal reflection. In addition, we offer a non-denominational chapel for committal services. The chapel, located on the lower floor, contains a 1920s Art Nouveau stained-glass window at the altar that was originally located in a French chateau.

Diversity amongst the groves

At Parklawn Memorial Park and Menorah Gardens, we pride ourselves on serving a diverse community. This is reflected in the many gardens throughout the property, including the Garden of the Last Supper, Menorah Garden, Buddhist Garden, Islamic Garden, Asian Garden, Vietnamese Garden, Baha'i Garden, Zoroastrian Garden, Orthodox Garden and Pet Cemetery. Our experienced team of counselors are knowledgeable and respectful of the traditions and religious burial customs reflected in our specialty gardens.

History

Parklawn Memorial Park and Menorah GardensThe original tract of land that is now Parklawn Memorial Park and Menorah Gardens was the Wilkins Estate, which consisted of 550 acres. Robert C. Wilkins—known for Wilkins Coffee—built his summer home on the property in 1916. The buildings and bridges are built of stone that was quarried from the property.

Historic charm

One of America's premier architects, John Russell Pope, designed the mansion. It is an example of classical revival architecture and is listed as a historic site. Robert Wilkins conveyed the house to John F. Wilkins, former publisher of The Washington Post.

Ownership over the years

In 1950, the property was sold to George Moss who established the cemetery in 1951. The Marlowe family acquired an interest in 1958 and full ownership by 1986. Several years later in 1992, Stewart Enterprises acquired Parklawn Memorial Park and Menorah Gardens. Today, we are a member of the Dignity Memorial® network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers.

Always a place of restful and rustic beauty

The rustic beauty of the grounds has been maintained as per the original architectural plan of Carlisle Butler and will forever retain the seclusion and restful peace for which it is known. Winding roads, bridges built of native white flint stone, rolling hills and valleys all add characteristic quaint charm to our cemetery property.
