At the age of 17, Robert began a distinguished career in the United States Navy, enlisting in 1955 and serving his country with honor for two decades. Rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer, he retired with an Honorable Discharge after 20 years of dedicated service. His naval career took him to various locations around the world, including Taiwan, Vietnam, Okinawa, the Pentagon, and Seattle. Robert’s commitment to his country was a defining aspect of his life and a source of immense pride.
Following his military retirement, Robert transitioned seamlessly into civilian life. From 1980 to 1994, he served as the business administrator for a church and school, demonstrating the same dedication and work ethic that had defined his naval career. In 1994, he relocated to Sun City, Arizona, where he worked as the athletic equipment director at Barry Goldwater High School until his full retirement in 2000 at the age of 62.
Faith was a cornerstone of Robert’s life. He was an active member of Grace Bible Church and served as chairman of the Elder Board until 2016. His leadership and devotion left an enduring legacy within his church community.
Robert married Jo Ellen Smith, and together they raised two children: Margie and Dean. In his later years, he moved in with his son Dean while courageously battling cancer. He found great joy in spending time with his family and cherished moments with his grandchildren—Jason, Jennifer, Doug, Paul, and Missy—and nine great-grandchildren who brought light to his life.
