Ralph attended Yonkers schools, graduating from Gorton High and attended Colgate University. He interrupted his studies to join the U.S. Navy (1944-1946). After which he returned to join his father in the family business, G. Strauss and Son Jewelers in Yonkers. As a certified Gemologist and watchmaker, a favorite activity was helping young couples find the perfect engagement and wedding rings.
With the Hudson River so near, his love for boats and fishing began early, as he built his own kayak and launched it at age 16. He continued to fish every summer until his passing.
Ralph was also a concert violinist. As an original member of the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra, he served as concertmaster (first violin) from 1963 into his nineties when he retired from playing.
Ralph is survived by his daughter Linda Bellmare, son-in-law Bruce Bellmare; grandsons: Bryan (wife Katie) Bellmare, Jim (wife Tara) Strauss, and Chad (wife Lauren) Bellmare; and 7 Great-Grand Children. He was predeceased by his spouse Margaret (Oakley) Strauss, his parents Gustav and Antonia Strauss, and his son Jim G. Strauss.
Ralph lived a full, adventurous life and loved his violin, ballroom dancing, skin diving and fishing on his beloved boat “Tightlines” in the Long island Sound as well as the Atlantic Ocean off Rhode Island.
