Priscilla “Pril” Brown Cox passed away peacefully on Monday, Nov. 14, 2022 at the Falmouth House/Oceanview, Falmouth, Maine. She was born June 9, 1931 to Joseph Gould Cook Sr. and Helen Crampton Cook.
Pril grew up in Waban, MA cavorting with her older sister Cynnie and younger brother Joe. The Cook family summered on Cape Cod with their good friends the Learnards. Eventually, the two families purchased adjacent land in Chatham and built beautiful homes, ensuring generations of beach frolicking between the extended families.
The Cook family also spent time in Jackman, Pril’s favorite place, where her paternal grandmother Celia Gould Cook “Gram” owned a farm on the banks of the Moose River. Pril loved her Gram dearly and also credits her with sparking her interest and love of travel by including Pril and other family members on many worldly adventures. This spark has now been handed down through multiple generations.
Pril attended Newton High School where she was head cheerleader, a role she came by naturally with her enthusiasm and energetic spirit. She earned a BA in Religion and Psychology at Mount Holyoke College while forging many lifelong friendships.
Pril met her husband and father of her children, Fulton M J Brown “Mike”, on a blind date sailing weekend. He sailed into her life, and 13 dates later, they were engaged and then married on September 13, 1958.
The couple honeymooned in Jackman near Gram’s farm in a rustic cottage on Big Wood Pond. Mike also fell in love with Jackman, and they brought their children there for many summers as they grew. These were often “working vacations” where in addition to fishing, paddling, and hiking Sally Mountain, there were roofs to be replaced and clapboards to be painted, and most of the unskilled crew was under the age of fifteen. There was always a crowd in the house with families of siblings, cousins, and dear friends.
Pril and Mike began their marriage fixing up a small cape in Marshfield, MA and before that was finished, moved to North Yarmouth, ME in 1968 to fix up an old rambling farmhouse, where they raised their four children Jennifer, Suzanne, Richmond, and Joseph. With Pril’s warmth and generosity at the helm, the family hosted many dinner parties and extended family holiday celebrations.
In the late 1970s, Pril earned her real estate license, discovering she loved matchmaking people and homes. With her enjoyment and ease in connecting with people, intelligence, and dedication, Pril was a superstar agent! Additionally, she cared deeply about preserving farmland and undeveloped land, involving herself early in the land trust movement.
Pril had energy to spare. She played tennis socially, practiced yoga well before it was in vogue, and walked daily saying, “I just love to get out where I can swing my arms!”
Mike died in 1998. Soon after, grandchildren began to arrive and Pril built her dream home on Princess Point in Yarmouth overlooking the marsh filled with egrets and ducks. She met her second husband, James “Jim” Cox, on match.com and they eloped to Paris. Pril had long been a member of the Foreside Community Church in Falmouth, and Jim was welcomed into the congregation. Pril was grateful for companionship in her spiritual journey. Jim passed away in May 2022.
Pril was easy to love and will be greatly missed. She was known for her wide smile and hearty laugh, her high energy and grace, her sense of humor and spunk. She will also be remembered for her special strawberry jam which tasted like fresh berries.
Pril was predeceased by her parents, her sister and brother, both husbands, and many beloved friends.
Pril is survived by her children Jenn, Suzanne, Rich, and Joe; her grandchildren Robin Fay, Jack, Kajsa, and Noah; her son in law Eric and daughter in law Amy: her godson Andy; scads of nieces and their families; her cousins Penny and Sam and their families; Jim’s children, step-children, and grandchildren.
Pril’s family would like to thank the staff of the Comfort Keepers, the Falmouth House, and Compassus Hospice for supporting and caring for Pril in her last year.
The family is not holding a formal memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Jackman/Moose River Valley Historical Society (P.O. Box 875, Jackman, ME 04945), The Royal River Conservation Trust (https://rrct.org), or Maine Audubon Society (https://maineaudubon.org) in the name of Priscilla Brown Cox.
