Phyllis M. Dotts

Freeport- Phyllis M. Dotts, 95, formerly of North Road in Yarmouth, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on May 14, 2018. Now in the loving hands of God, she reunited with the love of her life, Ed, in heaven.

She was born Phyllis Marion Proctor, September 16, 1922 in Portland, ME, a daughter of Louis and Ella (Thompson) Proctor. She was raised with five siblings in South Portland. After high school, Phyllis worked in retail for Porteous, Mitchell & Braun in Portland. Phyllis met West Virginian Army Sergeant Edward Dotts, who was stationed in Maine prior to WWII. When Ed returned home safely from the war, they married and settled in Yarmouth. There they happily raised two daughters, remodeled their home, planted large gardens, volunteered in the community, took family trips, and just enjoyed family life together. Once her daughters were grown, Phyllis returned to retail working for L.L. Bean in the original ladies department at the Freeport store.

Phyllis lived a full and contented life. For Ed and Phyllis, family was most important. They enjoyed summer vacations together at her parent’s cottage, traveling to Alaska and Florida to visit Linda and family, bowling with grandson, countless pool parties in the backyard with all the grand and great-grandchildren, attending their soccer, basketball and baseball games and attending Jan’s chorus concerts. These are just a few examples of their love and support for family and friends.

She also taught Sunday school for years at the Yarmouth Congregational Church.

Phyllis was a talented musician; playing piano, her electric Lowrey organ and her Gibson steel lap Hawaiian guitar. She played the guitar on a Portland radio station when she was a young girl. Ed and Phyllis could float across a dance floor.

Phyllis enjoyed and delighted in life’s simple pleasures such as sunsets, rainbows, gardens, autumn foliage and music.

She adored her family and was totally devoted to them all. She and Ed taught the family to share, to be honest, be kind, work hard and cherish love of family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by her husband, Edward Dotts; sisters, Beatrice Craig, Inez Morrell, Ethel Jenkins and her twin, Avis Proctor; brothers, Edward Proctor and Russell Proctor.

She is survived by daughters, Linda Forrest and her husband Bill of Florida, Janice Jarrett and her husband Don of Freeport, Maine; grandchildren, Adam (wife Tracy) Forrest of Ohio, Nathan (wife Kirstie) Jarrett of Brunswick, Maine; great-grandchildren; Piper, Caleb, Joseph, Chase and Francesca. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Hawthorne House in Freeport for their compassionate and excellent care giving them one more year with Mom, Grammy and Great-Grammy.

Phyllis remained home until she was 94 due in part to the care and services provided by Dr. James Donahue, Yarmouth Police Department, Scott Dugas, Leigh Eaton, Bob Miles and Sons and Comfort Keepers and many other local business. Thank you!
