Peter M. Zacharias

Mr. Zacharias was born February 3, 1943 in Portland, to Ernest and Dora (Boulay) Zacharias and spent his entire life on the family farm in Falmouth. He attended Falmouth High School and continued his education at the University of Maine, Orono, majoring in Animal Science.

Peter went on to own a successful dairy farm in Falmouth, winning many awards and being recognized nationally and abroad for his registered Holsteins. He won the New England Holstein Association’s “Outstanding Young Holstein Breeder” in 1979 as well as the Maine’s JayCee’s “Outstanding Young Farmer” award in 1980. For many years “Zacharias Holsteins” herd classification scores were in the top 10% of all herds in the United States. Peter’s cows were exhibited at National and International dairy competitions. He judged many dairy shows in the Northeast and Canada and was always interested in helping 4-H and younger exhibitors. The Falmouth Community Park now sits on property that Zacharias cows once grazed on.

Peter enjoyed watching sports on TV and attending games when he could. In 1980 he sponsored a youth basketball team which he was very proud of. “Grampa” liked spending time with his family and took pleasure in teaching his grandchildren about the dairy farm, even giving them rides on the backs of cows when they were little.

Peter is survived by his wife, Corrie (Nottingham) Zacharias of Falmouth and sister Elizabeth Moody of Cumberland, . His children and their spouses, David Zacharias of South Windsor, CT, Nancy Villacci of Farmington, Mark Zacharias of Falmouth, and Karen Zacharias Cowperthwaite of Portland and special family members Murray Spruce of Bolivia, NC and Dale Simmons of Brunswick, ME. His grandchildren Anna and Nicholas Zacharias of South Windsor, CT, Regina and Wesley Villacci of Farmington, and Eli & Lyle Cowperthwaite of Portland,

He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Zacharias and mother, Dora (Boulay) Zacharias.

A time of visitation for family and friends will be held Tuesday October 11, 2011 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Lindquist Funeral Home One Mayberry Lane Yarmouth.

Funeral services will be held at 11a.m. Wednesday October 12, 2011 at the funeral home.

Interment will follow at the Blanchard Cemetery Falmouth.
