Portland – Katherine M. “Kay” Moffett, 92, of Falmouth, died peacefully at The Cedars, June 29, 2014 after a courageous 10 week battle with cancer.
She was born on July 4th, 1921, in Portland, to Michael J. and Mary Folan Herward, grew up on Munjoy Hill and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1939 and from Northeastern Business College. Kay was employed as office manager for Government Employees Credit Union for many years and later as secretary for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company.
She married the love of her life, John, six months before he was called to serve in the US Army overseas in World War II. Because of her great faith in God, she never lost hope that he would return to her even after his capture by the German Nazis and placement in a prison camp. She knew that her prayers brought her husband home after being missing and “presumed dead” for well over a year.
Kay and John eventually settled down in Falmouth to raise a family. She was a member of the Women’s Literary Union, as well as the Cumberland Garden Club and enjoyed bowling and playing golf at the Portland Country Club where she was a member of the Women’s Golf Association.
In her later years she spent time reading, playing bridge with friends every Wednesday and enjoying the family pets that she loved. She was a communicant of Holy Martyrs Church in Falmouth for many years.
Kay is survived by her daughter Meredith and her husband Michael Brandon and her beloved grandsons: Matthew J. Magill and Jonathan S. Magill. She is predeceased by her husband, John A. Moffett and a son, John Christopher Moffett.
The family would like to express both gratitude and thanks to Hospice of Southern Maine, the staff of The Cedars and Dr. Rhonda Kroll for their loving care, direction and support.
Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery in Falmouth on Saturday July 5th. Please visit www.lindquistfuneralhome.com to share condolences, memories and tributes with Kay’s family
