Yarmouth, ME – Hugh A.C. (Armitage Chippindall) Shaw of Yarmouth, ME (formerly Framingham, MA and Walpole, NH) passed away peacefully on November 29, 2024 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough ME. at the age of 98. Born in Slough, England on January 19, 1926 to Hilda Dafforn and Laurence Shaw, he was raised in England.
Following his youth, he trained in the Royal Air Force as a pilot from 1944-1946 during WWII. Some of his flight training took place at the British Flying Training School at Falcon Field in Mesa, Arizona. After the war and qualifying for military educational benefits he attended the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada, majoring in Economics where he graduated in 1951.
In 1951 he married the late Gertrude Willimann in Brunnen Switzerland and shortly thereafter moved to New York City. Later they moved to Hartsdale NY to raise their three sons. For many years Hugh spent his summer vacations in Yarmouth on Casco Bay at the family summer cottage on Princes Point.
In 1964 he married his loving wife of nearly 50 years Ellen Tower and moved to Framingham, MA.
For his entire career, Hugh worked in finance at various companies such as Hale & Dorr, New England Merchants Bank, Putnam Advisory Company and retired on the executive committee as pension portfolio manager for the New England Ironworkers District Council, which he loved and respected fondly.
Hugh is remembered by his remarkable ease of his way of life. He loved warm fires, reading the Wall Street Journal cover to cover every day, his evening Scotch, following the highs and lows of the stock market, grilling steaks on his charcoal grill, his “farmhouse” in Walpole, NH, picking fresh vegetables at the local farm stand, his morning English tea in bed, walks with his loving 7 Golden Retrievers he raised over the years and reminiscing about his days in the Royal Air Force and his hero Winston Churchill. For many years he and his RAF fellow pilots would meet annually to reminisce, several of these reunions were hosted by Hugh at his summer home in Walpole NH.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen T. Shaw, his son David M. Shaw, stepson Daniel MacArthur, and stepdaughters Anne D. Greenwood and Jessica MacArthur.
He is survived by his sons Richard Shaw and Christopher Shaw and wife Diane of Yarmouth, ME and Matthew Shaw of Nantucket, MA. His stepson David MacArthur and wife Kathy of Litchfield, NH, his stepson in- law Gary Greenwood of Bethel CT and stepdaughter in- law Julie MacArthur of Fair Oaks, CA. His grandchildren Kathleen Shaw of Gray, ME, Brian Shaw of Danbury, CT, Douglas Shaw of Yarmouth, ME, Meredith Shaw of Boston, MA, Austin Shaw and wife Stephanie of Barre, VT, Melanie Klein and husband Harrison of Reading, MA, Carlene Shaw and fiancé Hayden Rice of Manchester, CT. His step grandchildren Kevin MacArthur and wife Kara of Boston, MA, Diana Proulx and husband Jay of Manchester, NH, Lucy MacArthur and husband Eric Lin of Sacramento, CA, Jessica Deans and husband Sam of Amarillo, TX and Hannah Greenwood of Honolulu, HI.
In addition, his great grandchildren Leo Shaw, Theodore Klein, Wesley Klein and Abigail Deans.
The family wishes to express our thanks to Hugh’s dear friends Anthony Miceli and Linda Robinson for their care, love and devotion to Hugh. Additionally, our gratitude go out to the staff at Bay Square at Yarmouth for the care he received for the last three years and to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House where he spent his last hours of a long and memorable life.
A private, family memorial will take place at a later date.
