Robert Eugene Kirk, 87, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his East Selah home on April 22, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. Bob was born November 14, 1924 in Yakima, WA to Robert and Martha Mae (Stephens) Kirk. He lived in Yakima all his life, attending Castlevale and Franklin Schools and completing his education at Yakima High School.
In 1942 Bob enlisted in the United States Army, serving in World War II in the infantry. His battalion was called the "Bushwackers." They were engaged in the Philippine Islands and fought in the battle at Luzon. Bob was awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman Badge. From there he was sent to Japan where he finished his service to our country as a military police officer.
Upon the conclusion of World War II in 1945, Bob was honorably discharged and went home. Over the years Bob would have many careers. His first post-military job was working for the American News Agency for two years before he found his true niche which was the car business. He owned and operated his own car dealership in Union Gap and was a partner in the start up of the local Subaru dealership on Fruitvale until he sold his share of the business. He thrived on hard work and was never afraid to try something new... how about a tow truck business... sure. He established City Towing in 1978 and operated that business for nearly 12 years. At the same time he operated the Western Union and a couple of used car lots. Next, Bob took a job at Industrial Air Products where he delivered air tanks and supplies all over the valley. Then he went to work for Central Pre-Mix driving long haul to California and back. He also drove truck for Superior Asphalt and all the while maintained his own airplane and a commercial license and was often a pilot for hire.
In 1947, Bob married Jan (Wiley) Kohler and together they had three daughters, Sherrie, Karan and Patricia. He was always proud of his girls and loved them dearly. He always had time to help them. Even after his illness, when they would call with car questions, he was more than willing to help, because Bob was a true mechanic who could fix anything.
During the 1950’s Bob was a race car driver at Yakima Speedway. His car, #99, was a frequent winner of the Trophy Dash that netted him many, many trophies.
Bob is survived by his daughter Karan (KC) Johnson of Fort Collins, CO, Patricia Brown of Atlanta, GA, his loving companion and best friend of 16 years, Lucy Young of Yakima, his only brother Ret. Lt. Col. Leland (June) Kirk of Chandler, AZ; nephews Fred (Barbara) Kirk of Fairfield, CA and Bud Kirk of Mesa, AZ; five grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Bob is preceded in death by his parents and oldest daughter, Sherrie Kirk.
Bob will be missed by his family and friends, but we are all thankful to God that his pain and suffering is now over. "Heaven welcomes you Bobby - you’re probably already fixing something up there."
Visitation and viewing will be held at Keith & Keith Funeral Home tonight from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A graveside service will be conducted Friday, April 27, 2012 at 10:00 am in the Terrace Heights Memorial Park with full military honors provided.
