Major Charles Frederick McVicker (USAF Retired) passed away Monday June 22nd, 2015 at home after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Charles was born September 10th, 1928 to Edward and Edyth McVicker in Darrozette Texas. His family later moved to Kalama, Washington where he attended Kalama High School and graduated in 1946. He entered the Marine Corps upon graduation and was later deployed to Korea, where he participated in the seizure of Inchon and Seoul. After completing service he still felt the calling to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was accepted into flight training school. He spent much of his Air Force-career with KC-97's and also B-47's as part of the Strategic Air Command. It was in the Air Force that he met Nannette Hood, they married in 1960 and had three kids; Keith McVicker, Bruce McVicker, and Tina (Wayne) McVicker. Upon Charles's retirement in August of 1969 they settled in Greeley Colorado where he took a sales position with Mutual of Omaha. He quickly rose to be assistant manager and in 1976 was offered the opportunity to move to Yakima to be general manager of the local office. After the death of his wife Nannette, he remarried Rebecca Sellers in 1982 and a few short years later welcomed his youngest son Kevin McVicker. He soon made the decision to semi-retire, he went back to school and received his teaching certificate in History from Central Washington University and worked for the next 20 years as a substitute teacher in both the Selah and West Valley School Districts. Believe it or not he found this relaxing and this gave him the ability to spend more time with his family, while keeping him busy. Charles always led an active lifestyle and enjoyed waterskiing, snow-skiing, fishing and camping with his family even into his later years. He will be remembered by his loved ones as a hardworking, honest, individual with a great sense of humor. He is survived by his wife Rebecca McVicker (Yakima), two sons Bruce McVicker (Oak Park, CA ) and Kevin McVicker (Yakima) his daughter Tina Wayne (Seattle), six grandkids; Hailey Wayne, Bryon Wayne, Katie McVicker, Lisa McVicker, Ariel McVicker and Miranda McVicker, and one great-grandkid Isaiah Rivera. Our family would like to extend our greatest thanks to Dr. Brady and his supportive staff at Washington Hematology-Oncology, for always providing the highest level of care. Memorial services will be Monday at 11:00 am at Rainier Memorial Center in Terrace Heights. To share a memory of Charles visit, www.lepfuneralhome.com.
