Evelyn grew up out in Wiley City in her early years, riding her horse to the Marks school, which was a 3 room school, for 5 years. Then her family moved to the Wenas and she finished school in Selah. She went 2 years to St. Elizabeth School of Nursing. Evelyn was Princes to the Ellensburg Rodeo from Yakima County in 1948. She married her high school sweetheart Aubrey Newman. Together they had 4 children, Linda Kisner, Dennis Newman, Cindy Paul (Steve) and David Newman (Laura). Evelyn loved sports of any kind, she organized a ladies evening volleyball in Selah and coached a teenage girls softball team for 2 years.
Most know her for being the leader of the Red Hot Riders 4-H club in the Wenas for 13 years. At the time of their retirement in 1992, Aub and Eve moved to Desert Aire, golfing almost daily. They made many friends wherever they were. She was also an avid golfer, having scored 2 holes in one!
Evelyn was a charter member and past President of the Yakima County American Association of Medical Assistants. Longtime member of the Wenas Grange. Past President of the Desert Aire Owners Assn., and of the Desert Aire Golf & Country Club. Past President of the Desert Aire Ladies Golf Club.
Evelyn was a farm girl from the word go. Living on a 24 acre ranch, with lots of animals and fields of all kinds of crops. She followed her kids through all their sports and always encouraged them to do the best they could. She was a horse lady to the day she died. Following her children through 4-H, many trail rides and horse shows. She always had a large garden loved to share her produce. She was an avid seamstress, teaching both daughters how to sew. At the age of 80 her daughter bought a horse for her to ride and spent the next 2 summers riding over 100 miles each summer in the mountains. Being able to take her into the lake where her first daughter’s ashes were placed.
Evelyn was active in the medical profession, spending 25 years working for doctors. Always sharing her knowledge with others. Retiring after 12 years with Naches Selah Irrigation District in Selah. All her kids’ friends called her MOM, and she loved it!
Aubrey and Evelyn loved to travel and spent about 10 years traveling south for the winter, until Aubrey’s health no longer allowed them to travel. Evelyn didn’t know a stranger, so it was always an adventure for her. She always adapted to change and looked forward to what was next.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Aubrey, her oldest daughter Linda, her parents Roy and Blanche, her mother-in law, Bernice, and sister-in-law, Betty. She is survived by her sister Elaine (Ken) Goudy of Yakima, her 2 sons, Dennis and David Newman and daughter Cindy Paul, 5 grandkids, several great- and great-great-grandkids.
