Bernardo (Nayo) “Ben” Trevino, 85, died Dec. 24, 2022, at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Nayo was born on Nov. 11, 1937, in Rosebud, TX to Vicente Trevino and Herminia Reyna, and raised by his grandparents, Vicente and Cruz Trevino in Sunnyside, WA. He married Mercedes Urvina on Aug. 26, 1961, and together they raised five daughters. Nayo was a hard worker and in his early years worked in the fields, from picking fruit to cutting asparagus, he did whatever he had to, to support his family.
He studied drafting in a local trade school, and then worked for Boeing in Seattle in the late 1960s. After returning to Yakima he was a long-time employee of the Boise Cascade Mill, working as a saw filer and where he met his lifelong friend Ted Godwin. He was the custodian of Westpark United Methodist Church, where he instilled a strong work ethic in his children by making them work side by side with him every weekend. Nayo owned and operated two local taverns, La Frontera, and The Pitchers Inn. After retirement he enjoyed traveling, fishing, and spending time on his property at the Potholes. Above all, Nayo was a family man, devoted to his wife, Mercedes, and his five daughters. Nayo was the last of the pioneers who helped bring the Spanish mass to St. Joseph in Yakima. He was strong in his faith, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Las Familias Unidas, and an avid woodcarver. He attended St. Joseph Church in Yakima for many years, and in recent years attended Holy Redeemer and St. John Church in Naches. He was a lover of baseball, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. This past October, his daughter Theresa and son-in-law Mario, fulfilled his lifelong dream by taking him to Los Angeles, where he attended two LA Dodgers home games, along with a tour of Dodger Stadium. He loved to attend Seattle Mariners games as well, especially when they were handing out bobble-heads which he loved to collect.
