Norma Jean Palmer-Mayle, 98, of Westerville, peacefully entered eternal rest at her home on October 25, 2022. She was born on September 10, 1924, in Chillicothe OH, to the late Charles and Effie (Hansberry) Cunningham. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands John H. Palmer and Darwin Mayle; siblings, Juanita Gardner, Viola Fincher, and Millard Cunningham; and grandson Taye Palmer.
Norma was a caring matriarch that put her family above all else. She was an incredible role model and made a significant impact on the lives of many. Her resolve was steeped in integrity and perseverance and she was known for using the encouraging phrase. “When life gives you lemons…”
Fiercely devoted to her country, Norma served proudly as Rosie the Riveter at Curtiss-Wright during World War II. She went on to craft a notable career working for Veterans Affairs and at DSCC in Columbus, Ohio. After her retirement from government work, Norma forged her new career chapter as a successful real estate agent. Her tenacity and drive allowed her to climb to the top of the local markets and become one of the area’s most notable realtors.
When Norma left the working world, she used her newly found free time and generous passion to give back to her community. She immersed herself in culture as she served on the Women’s Service Board at the King’s Art Center. Later, she became an eager history buff, volunteering at the celebrated Campus Martius Museum in Marietta, Ohio.
Norma’s devotion to Christ led her to become a long-time member of Shiloh Baptist in Columbus, Ohio. She was also an impressive Bridge player and spirited lover of all things fashion and home decor. With family and friends, Norma traveled the world, enjoying incredible experiences and collecting lifelong memories. Eventually, her travels took her to Boca Raton, Florida where she bought a home and spent the winters. One of Norma’s greatest loves was sharing stories of her extraordinary life with friends and family.
Norma will be greatly missed by her adoring family, including children, Martez Carter and Johnny (Jodi) Palmer; grandchildren, Derric (Amanda) Carter, Jonathan (Ashley) Palmer, and Luke (Lexie) Palmer; great-grandchildren, Gavyn G. Palmer, Baylor J. Palmer, Effie R. Carter, Norrie J. Carter, and Elias J. Palmer.
A Celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at 11 AM, at the Schoedinger Worthington funeral home, 6699 North High St., Worthington OH, 43085.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Norma’s name may be made to St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital, a cause that was near and dear to her heart.
