Arthur C. “Art- just please don’t call him Junior” Chambers Jr., 68, of Galloway, passed from us peacefully into eternal life on March 10, 2023, at Hospice of Central Ohio at the OSU Wexner Medical Center after a sudden illness, his beloved wife Jean at his side holding his hand as she did throughout their marriage. Art was born in Maine to the late Lois and Arthur C. Chambers Sr. The family including his older sister Patricia “Pat” lived in various cities across the country as Art Sr. was in the U.S. Air Force.
Art played clarinet then saxophone, playing with the school Jazz Band and orchestra. Art was also active in ROTC and Martial Arts, which he pursued for many years. Art graduated from East High School and then went on to earn an Associates degree in Business Administration from Columbus State Community College.
Art had difficulty with his vision from childhood, but it was during the time that Art was working for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department that Art’s vision started to quickly decline. He eventually lost all his sight to glaucoma. Art would not let even this challenge stop him. He travelled to Seeing Eye Dogs of Morristown, NJ where he received training along with being supplied a number of guide dogs including “Owen” and “Garcia”, two of his favorites. Art sought vocational training, learned Braille, and studied restaurant management in Cleveland. Art then ran a café/coffee shop in the State Office Tower downtown. In addition, he became a licensed massage therapist. For about the last 20 years in addition to his massage work, he was employed by CallTech/Teleperformance USA Inc. providing upper technical support services for such projects as Verizon FiOS, and higher tier customer services for other projects. His compassion, patience, sense of humor and intelligence made him many long-time friends.
Art believed in lifelong learning towards self awareness and community improvement. He studied Martial Arts during his years in school and beyond. He became Tibetan Buddhist as the philosophy spoke to him as a means of relief of suffering and living a closer relationship to God. He has been a long time member of the Columbus KTC Buddhist Center, and also studied with the abbot and other teachers of the Karma Triyana Dharmachakra (KTD) Monastery above Woodstock, NY.
Art was a longtime member of the downtown and Grove City YMCA, and a member of the TriVillage Lion’s Club, challenged to be “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.” Art along with his wife Jean were General level Amateur Radio Operators. Together they belonged to several area radio clubs including the Central Ohio Radio Club, the Capital City Repeater Association, and Central Ohio Amateur Radio Emergency Service. Art’s most unique skill has been playing the Bagpipes. He participated in group and individual competitions in various Highland Games from Nova Scotia to the Ohio Scottish Games near Oberlin Ohio.
Art is survived by his beloved wife Jean, his son Collier (first marriage); his sister Patricia Chambers and nephew Toron (Amy) Franklin; his especially close cousins Paris (Sherri) Gore and Sheila “Shell” (DaRall) La Rue; his mom-in-law Anne Blaisdell; and his large network of Aunts, Uncles, nieces, nephews, in-laws, other relatives and many friends.
