Richard is the son of the late Edward Nielsen and Anna Josephson, who migrated from their native countries of Denmark and Sweden, respectively. He is survived by his loving wife, Donna Nielsen. Richard is survived by four children: Mark Nielsen, Rick Nielsen, Bob Nielsen and Mary Ann Nielsen; and three step children Mark Kitayama, Ben Marchuk and Joel Hustad. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Dawn Emmons and John Nielsen and two great grandsons Jordon Nielsen and Landon Emmons.
Richard is a WW II Army veteran landing on Omaha Beach 4 days after the invasion of Normandy. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge, Battle of Mortain, and assisted in the liberation of Maastricht, NL. Richard was awarded the Bronze Star for his services in the Army and in WW II. Richard also served his country with over 29 years in the United States Air Force including the Korean War and Viet Nam conflict.
Richard was a devoted, caring husband and father. He loved life, laughter and the company of his family and friends. He was an avid golfer and Michigan football fan. He will be loved for his sense of humor, winning smile and fighting spirit. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of all that knew and loved him.
Services will be held at First Baptist Church, Woodstock on Monday, Dec. 16 at 10 AM in Woodstock, Georgia and will be interred at Bay Pines National Cemetery in Florida at a later date.
