Alvin Kenneth Collins, known to his loved ones as Al, and Big Al, passed away on April 24, 2024, at the age of 96. He was born in Guttenberg, New Jersey to Hazel Jensen and James Collins on August 29, 1927.
Alvin proudly served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1948, stationed on various ships including the USS Ticonderoga, USS Lexington, and USS Tortuga. His time in the Navy held a special place in his heart, as it provided him with invaluable skills and the chance to explore the stunning islands of the Pacific Reserve Fleet in San Diego, California.
He was married to Alice Gonzalez from 1947 to 1966, with whom he had three children: Patricia Lorraine Collins Patterson, James Michael Collins, and Jean Cheryl Collins. Following Alice, he married Lorraine Gaydos from 1969 to 1981, and later Clemmie Evans Faulkner from 1982 until her passing in 2003.
Alvin dedicated many years of service to Northrup Grumman, where he worked as a Field Services Manager from 1958 until his retirement in 1988. During his tenure with Northrup Grumman, Alvin spent four memorable years living in Scotland, a period he cherished deeply, especially for the golf experiences it offered him.
An enthusiastic golfer, Alvin had the privilege of playing on some of the world's most prestigious golf courses. Even at the age of 96, he continued to live independently and enjoy his favorite sport until shortly before his passing.
Beyond golf, Alvin found joy in watching football, soccer, baseball, NASCAR, and horse racing, often engaging in friendly wagers with friends. Known for his charm, gardening skills, captivating storytelling, and love for animals, Alvin was affectionately called "Dr. Doolittle" by those who knew him.
Alvin is survived by his children, stepchildren, twelve grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. A Military Service in honor of Alvin's service will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia on May 13th at 10:00 am.
