Philip Baxter was born on October 21st, 1947 to Mr. Herbert Baxter and Mrs. Mary Baxter (nee Hopkins) in the Bronx, New York. Philip was raised in the Bronx River Houses, where he attended James Monroe High School.
On April 26th, 1969, Philip Baxter married Loretta Holland and soon moved to Queensbridge Houses. Their union produced four sons; Philip Baxter Jr. (PJ) Jermain Baxter, Brandon Baxter and Byron Baxter.
Philip was an avid lover of music and his favorite recording artists were The Chi-Lites, Jackie Wilson, Kool & the Gang, and The Temptations.
On January 1966, Philip Baxter joined the United States Army where he served 12 months in Vietnam and received numerous honors such as; National Defense Service Medal, Expert (Rifle W-14); Vietnam Service Medal W/2 Bronze Service Stars; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal W/device 1960; Combat Infantryman’s Badge (1st Award); and 1 Overseas Service Bar. In 1972, Philip Baxter was honorably discharged from the Army with the rank of an E-5, Sergeant.
Philip Baxter was a dutiful employee with the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) for 27-years. Philip started out as a porter and then was promoted to Track Worker, Power Distribution Department, Third Rail.
On September 30th, 2019, Philip was admitted to Long Island Jewish Medical Center after going into cardiac arrest. He fought the good fight and to the dismay of all, on October 13th, 2019, Philip Baxter lost his battle and was called home. Philip was proceeded in death by his Wife Loretta Baxter, his sister Maria (Resie) Baxter and is mourned by his two brothers Thomas and Richard Baxter, his four sons, Philip Baxter Jr. (PJ), Jermain Baxter, Brandon Baxter and Byron Baxter; his daughters-in-Laws, Emily, Ebonie, and Shemeeka; his seven grandchildren, Tianna, Tamia, Brianna, Cyrus, Christian, Byron Jr, and Blake; nieces and nephews, Earlene Ware and Family, several god children, and close friends who loved and cared for him dearly.
