Joe is survived by wife, Bobbie and children, Daniel, Zoe, and Max Johnson of Woodbury, MN. Joe is also survived by brothers, Randy (Dow) Athnos, Mark (Lu) Athnos, and Jim (Pat) Johnson.
Preceded in death by parents, Dwaine and Ardyce and older brother, Greg Athnos.
Joe loved his family and was incredibly proud of each of his children. Joe always had his camera around his neck, ready to capture something of beauty, especially his children. He was a great bassist, who loved music of all sorts, but had a special love for classical music. He even passed his love of music to his children, who he encouraged to take lessons in classical piano through their childhoods. He took every chance to convince Bobbie to love classical music as much as he could. Joe was generous with his time and abilities, often helping Bobbie with events at her school and sharing his expertise to help with the math curriculum. Bobbie couldn’t have accomplished what she has without her husband’s unconditional love and support. He was a committed and involved dad helping his children with their homework and projects and driving them to and from their lessons and activities. He was their cheerleader, always championing their accomplishments. Joe also acted like a family doctor, always taking care of everyone’s medical needs, from scrapes to late-night emergency room visits. He was passionate about politics and current events and loved debating his children on hot topics. The family enjoyed competitions such as cooking challenges, and though he often ranked near the bottom, no one was able to beat him as a grill master, especially his grilled ribeye steaks. Joe loved long walks and hikes with his family. At the start of walks he would set the pace with his kids, but near the end of walks he would always slow down to hold his exhausted wife’s hand. He loved family road trips, Bobbie and Daniel’s cooking, and Zoe and Max’s desserts. Most importantly, he was a man with a pure heart and a deep love for his savior, Jesus Christ.
